Difference between these centrotec hand drivers?

495228 is the old version.  It has the same attachment point that Festool drills have.  It requires the Centrotec Chuck to be attached so that it can use bits, bit holders, and other attachments like Festool right angle chucks.

200140 is the new version.  It has a non-removable bit holder built in.  Notice that the end has a bit holder that looks like this one:
WIHA 7148 C CENTROFIX BIT HOLDER
You cannot add the Centrotec chuck or other Centrotec attachments to this newer version, which is a shame.

Yeah, I had wanted a Centrotec handle driver for a long time, but once I finally ordered one I was notified that the part number had changed. When it arrived I found that despite the Centrotec labeling, it was not Centrotec at all -- just a typical bit driver. And I already had enough bit drivers in my tool box. Yet, as soon as I placed a bit into the driver I discovered that it held bits much better than any of the others I have. This new(er) Festool handle driver holds the bits securely without any play at all. Much better than my [previously] favorite Wera driver. I've tried all the different brands of bits in this new driver and it holds them all without any slop. You'll especially love this when using longer bits, as it will work and feel just like a one-piece tool. This new driver is now my go-to driver. And I like it so much that I really don't mind that it wasn't the Centrotec driver that I thought I was ordering.  [big grin]

Thanks [member=182]Corwin[/member] that's a resounding recommendation.

And thank you [member=18283]RobBob[/member] for those videos. I'd seen the first, but enjoyed the second!

"Festool 200140 Centrotec Handle Driver; Compatible with all Festool Centrotec drill and driver bits"

So, is the above text from Tool Nut incorrect?

This product page has photos of 2 different drivers. One of them must be incorrect...

The new 200140 handle is compatible with all Centrotec bits and drivers, just not Centrotec accessory chucks.  The picture of the handle with the green Centrotec Chuck - 492135 does not belong with the new 200140 handle.  Centrotec Chuck - 492135 will not work with the new handle 200140.

Yes, Festool USA's product page does need to be updated as it shows a photo of both the old Centrotec version and the new version.

While a Centrotec bit can fit into any 1/4" driver, this new handle from Festool is not Centrotec and really should not sport the Centrotec label at all for there is noting about it that is Centrotec.

And while the new version works very nice, and I highly recommend it, I still wish they would offer the old Centrotec model as I had wanted it to work with my Centrotec chucks. Anyone have one they want to sell?  [smile]

Someone used the exact same text for both old and new drivers.  As we have shown, the drivers are not the same at all.

I have the one with the built-in chuck. I'd trade it for one that accepts the external centrotec chuck.

By the way, if you want the "old style" hand driver, you can get it via Amazon.co.uk here (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004SIVIR4) shipped to the US -VAT is about $35.00 USD.  Both drivers are great for different reasons.  The old style is perfect when you use a right angle attachment to get odd placed screws in and out.  The new one locks onto the Centrotec bits like a shark and feel very solid in hand.  Ergonomics are the same on both.

Hope it helps.

Cheers.  Bryan.

Actually, I'm not sure you can… I ordered one from Amazon here in the UK, thinking I'd found a supplier of the older, rather more useful, item. At the time of writing they are still advertising it with the 'correct' picture, model number and (the higher) price. Other sellers are showing the pic of the 'old' item with correct number, but an alternative description in the details, so if you're looking for one Amazon go carefully.

But, as you have probably guessed by now, I received the later '200140' item.
As noted, it does grip generic 1/4" (hex) bits pretty well (as other brands do) but the regular 25mm long bits go in so far that the tip is barely exposed from the holder which is rather odd and makes the bits awkward to remove (and I have fairly slim and dextrous fingers - anyone with large manly hands or wearing gloves will have no chance).

It does grip Centrotec bits, but only the back part of the hex up to the groove - just as if it were a 'legacy' 25mm screwdriver bit. As noted above, I'm at a loss to know what qualified it as a Centrotec item, there is really nothing Centrotec about it.

Haven't heard back from Amazon yet about their mistake, but I'm also somewhat disappointed with Festool for making such a mediocre (if not pointless or ill-conceived) item. Or have I missed something?

Well, Amazon replied within half-an-hour, will refund the price and let me keep the item… which I think is generous/gracious since it may well be the manufacturer's own info not being updated that had misled them.

I still can't see much use for it though; I really wanted to fit it to Centrotec and angle chucks...

I would like the older one too.

I asked why they were still advertising it with a photo of the older part, and the old part number in the title, and got this response:

"Dear Geoff, it is down to who ever set this listing up - Amazon needs to amend it or who ever owns the original listing. We are unable to amend any part of this listing. Kind regards Healy's Tools."

That doesn't seem very satisfactory to me?  I'm not sure how Amazon would update the listing without some input from the supplier.  But then I don't understand Amazon - the same item, with the same questions, and answers apparently from Healy's Tools, is now shown as being sold by 'Amazon Warehouse Deals'.  The Nuts & Bolts listing also shows the old photo - but at least it shows the new part number.

Many of us still want the Original 495228 Centrotech handle.
Is there any update on supply or availability?

Festool doesn't make them anymore, your only hope is to find a used one or a dealer with old stock.
