Do I need new collets? Can't insert bits into either 8mm or 1/4 for OF 1010

Hi - During a prolonged move, I had my tools in storage for about a year. Now setting up my shop again, went to use my OF 1010 yesterday and I can't insert either 8mm or 1/4 bits into the collets. There was a bit of corrosion inside the nuts, which I believe I cleaned out fully. Reassembled... still won't fit.

Any tricks or tips, or should I just bite the bullet and buy 2 new collets?

Thank you!

Hi,

  Welcome to the forum!  [smile]

    How did you clean them?

I suggest soaking in a cleaner to make sure all the nooks and crannies get thoroughly cleaned.

Used a rust eraser, then a rag with 3 in 1 oil.

What kind of cleaner would you use? Would rather get a general purpose tool cleaner vs. router bit cleaner, as I don't use the router that often.

Thank you! Will give it a try. There must be something inside the bore of the collets. I never had any trouble getting bits in previously....

Suspend them in a Extreme Simple Green aircraft and precision cleaner over night. Remove from solution rinse with water and blast them with compressed air. I have soaked carbide tipped blades with heavy pitch and resin, using this product, over night and the next day they sparkle new. No brushing needed.

CAUTION: All if any printing/paint on part of any kind may be removed by the solution.

I’d try 3M 800 Wet or Dry with light oil applied on a mandrel to lightly burnish the inside diameter of the collets. It probably won’t take much as everything is a close tolerance fit. Don’t reef on it just a simple kiss and a promise.  [big grin]
