Do you buy tools because you know you need them or because you might someday

Thank you CopCar for the recon info for the Canadian Festool market. I'll check with the dealers here when I'm next in their stores. Much appreciated!

I got a lot of tools, can do most anything with them, so generally I will buy a tool only if needed. I will also upgrade tools to something better, generally Festools. I would love to have a Kapex, but it is way too expensive. My current miter saw is not the best, it is heavy to lug around, but it does the job well enough. I would love to have a Domino, but I think I will continue cutting mortise and tenon joints (tool is expensive, and I am worried about getting the floating tenons in the future for a reasonable price). Woodhaven has a nice horizontal router table that can be used to cut mortises for floating tenons, and use my underutilized OF1400. Also, I stay away from stores that sell woodworking tools.

Not sure I understand this point... are you saying that purchasing the dominoes in the future may be difficult?  due to price or availability?  I have the 700 and often will make my own dominos with some stock and a round over bit.  Mainly have done so for a wider tenon than is made by Festool.

Cheers.  Bryan.

I have bought tools that I haven't used, but have anticipated using for projects. It's nice to have the right tool for the right job. I have a TS75 I have not used, but bought it because I want to make inspired Mid century Modern furniture pieces with angle cuts in  almost 2" material. I have started designing the pieces, just haven't had time to build them. I have a TS55 I use all the time. Of the Festools I have purchased, I am happy to say that if I am not using it now, I will sometime, and of the ones I haven't used, they were all picked up at the recondition sale, so they were purchase more for the anticipation of use with saving some money.

I have been using Festools for five years or so, and almost every year, prices have gone up. So my concern is related to pricing. I realize that Festool makes superior tools, many of them are incredibly time saving, but there are alternatives that work as well as they always have. Making dominos (floating tenons) is certainly an option, and that is what I would probably do.

Ummmmm.... I think it is best that I don't respond to this thread! [scared]

I'm almost at the point where I'll have to wait for Festool to announce new tools in order to have something to add!

I know, I know!  It's not like I'm just collecting. I AM thinking of using everything I've purchased, but yes... I have gone somewhat overboard... Wayyyy overboard!

Cheers,

Frank

Frank, you're my hero!  [smile]

When I was a kid and lived with my parents, I had no need for tools because my Dad and uncles together had ALL THE TOOLS. We fixed everything all the time.

When I left the nest and wanted/needed to work on things myself, I determined that I could fix the problem(s) and buy whatever tool(s) required for less than paying someone else. I acquired a lot of tools and a few years later, could fix almost anything with what I already had. Then, from old relatives giving me their old tools, my tool collection grew to really complete and almost embarrassingly awesome.

The next thing that happened was my house was cleaned out by thieves and suddenly, I had NO tools.

It was bad that they took all of my personal stuff but my tool collection was irreplaceable.

I currently have a pretty good tool collection but nothing like I had before - Oh well... My woodworking type tool collection is getting pretty awesome.

I still buy tools for a need and that has always worked for me. When I have customers talk about potential future need, I try to point out that if that need arises, I'm only a couple/one/few days away - sometimes, I'm right around the corner.

(I'm in Aberdeen, Scotland at the moment for annual simulator recurrency training, and I have a delivery of the newest Centrotec Woodworkers Kit being delivered to the hotel on Monday because it's NAINA and I WANT IT! It will be my THIRD Centrotec Limited Edition set of different flavors!  Yikes... I am Sooooo Sick! [blink])

Cheers,

Frank

Frank buddy, I'm in the same boat as you....Festool needs to introduce more tools in the US !

Except I use my tools.    [tongue]    [poke]  [oops]

But I buy what I want, because what I want, which means  I need.

Do I need all the tools I have?  HECK YEAH !  How else would my collection be better then others?    [tongue]

Seriously,  When I started out with home repair projects I told myself,    If another guy can do it,    so can I.

So why not invest in quality tools that will last.

Hey, if you want it and have the money, why not? You can't take it with you - the cash that is. The Festool's can go with you on a Sysroll...

[big grin] [thumbs up]

I stopped by Rockler today to purchase some General Finishes stains and happened to be wearing my Festool tee shirt.  A young guy checking out at the same time asked if I worked for Festool and was disappointed when I told him I was only a frequent procurer and he replied that Rockler needs to get Festool back in their stores!

Just for those people that might buy a tool on impulse!
