Does the North American AGC 18 ship with a 5” guard or a 4-1/2” guard?

The bare tool says 115 at the end and the kit says 125 at the end.
Where I come from (planet earth) that translates to the bare tool shipping with a 4-1/2” guard and the kit shipping with a 5” guard.  I find that really hard to believe.  At 8400 rpm, this is technically both a 5” and a 4-1/2” grinder but I am indeed at the mercy of the size guards you supply soooo...what size is this grinder?

I’m almost certain the grinder is offered in 115mm and 125mm models.

The Fein is distinctly sold as both.  I have a suspicion that the AGC-18 is sold as 115mm here and 125mm everywhere else.

The 125 designation is parroted across the online retailers.  The catalog just calls it the AGC-18 and specifies 4-1/2”.

In Europe all small grinders are only available in 125 mm from Festool.

I sincerely doubt they would make a different product category for the USA only and offer a 115 mm version.

I think somebody made a mistake somewhere when entering data in a computer and now everybody is repeating it.

Good catch, and for the Americans certainly something to get to the bottom to.

That's the rub, they did go out of the way to include a 5/8' threaded spindle because they had to.  While I prefer 5", and am aware that that is the most common in any of the outside countries I'm familiar with, 4-1/2" (115) is the most common in the states.  To the extent that I have to order anything 5" and all you can find at the homeowner stores is 4-1/2" and maybe 7' if you're lucky.  Thankfully one of the chains, Menards, sells PFERD SG (but, again, mostly only 4-1/2").  Thanks to COVID, local suppliers currently have hours that make it impossible to to get to before or after work.

I hope you find resolution.

So checking out the website, yeah, it's pretty mind blowing. You select cutting and it takes you to just this grinder, skips a level. But then you have basic and plus package, and it list different size grinders.....

I'm straight up confused if there is 1 size in the US or both.

While I get that Festool decided to make something more N.A. friendly by making it 4-1/2,  it feels like a missed opportunity to harmonize the USA with the world, and just offer the 125 with the same wheels as the rest of the world. Festool should be working to get the US to match the world, not caving to the US.  In this case, they could have just flooded stores with 125 consumable stuff at a really good price to make resistance low and maybe get other manufactures to follow. It's not like everyone doesn't all ready make it for the rest of the world, not hard to just start shipping some to the US and Canada.

I purchased the bare tool and can confirm that it is only the 4 1/2” guard that comes in the box as the bare tool. Also note that it is the open faced guard.

In digging through my owners manual, it never mentions anything other than 4 1/2” as the capacity.

115 is also a much used size here. Though it tends to be on the cheaper DIY models, and most professional tools are 125, but most of the time you can also get a 115 guard for them.

I do not understand the need for a 115 at all, it's just too small, even the 125 isn't that big, and the extra cutting depth over the 115 is well needed.

Here you can also get grinders in sizes 150, 180, 210, 230, 260 and even 320 mm.

The AGC 18 is only 115mm in the North American market. We are looking into the listing on the site so it can be corrected.

I can’t change the fact that for whatever reason 4-1/2” is the most popular size in the US (by a long shot).  Most general hardware stores and retail chains only carry 4-1/2” cut off wheels and grinding discs.  I agree, that anything under 5” is bogus.  I used the Festool grinder for a couple of hours on Friday.  It’s worthy enough that I’ll order the 5” Fein guard for it.

FWIW...for those interested in running 5" wheels on the AGC 18, here are the part numbers for the Fein 5" guards that fit the AGC.

Here's the 4-1/2" Festool guard on the left and the 5" Fein guard on the right.

The Fein guard installed with a 5" Cubitron cut off disc.

A search will come up with the other guard.

And here's the 20% discount code.  JSCL0PWT20AB916K1  It ends May 28th. Zoro has a ton of other items that may be of interest. I recently ordered some Pferd files from them and they are brilliant.

Thank you. Looks like its out of stock and i guess coupon expired lol
