Hey guys

I have been using and loving the domino however, today after about 70 domino holes on a new bit, the damn thing broke. Can I assume this is just a bad factory bit or is this normal. And I did not hit any screws with it. I was domino'ing red oak.

Thanks
Shaun

Definitely not normal.  What size of bit was it ?  All mine have many more holes on them than that, many many more.

Sorry you experienced the broken bit.  I have broken a bit.  It was when I forgot my dust collector and didn't have dust extraction.  That is highly recommended / required for the tool.

I have broken 2 of the 5mm bits. Once when trying to widen an existing slot and once unknown cause. Both times in plywood. Mine broke the carbide tip off both times. Neither bit had more than 100 slots cut. The larger bits are definitely more durable.

5mm bit. carbide tip broke off just like PeterK. I had dust extractor connected. Took it to woodcraft tonight. They are taking care of it for me although the loaner bit they gave me was their shop bit and it's not very sharp. Getting tear out when using it.

i have had 2 bits break on me over the last year or 2  one was in oak.. but hey drill bits break also... is it normal dont know.. I always have a spare 5mm bit for when that happens.

I also broke a 5mm bit after probably 50 - 75 cuts.  There's a lot of side to side force in the Domino action, and plunging too fast in hard material like oak can stress a hardened, and therefore brittle, cutter.  My guess is you just went a bit too fast for the small cutter to handle.
