Hi there, I'm fairly new to Festool, I currently have the TS 55R, and a C15 Li (in the mail as we speak, no less). I hadn't planned on jumping in to Festool so quickly, but with the price increase in Canada coming up I'm considering purchasing a Domino ahead of the increase.

As I haven't really had a lot of time to restock my tool wallet so to speak, I'm wondering about accessories. Specifically, I've read nothing but great reviews on the Domino Systainer Assortment.  Most of my work now is with 3/4" Ply. I do a lot of cabinetry, and storage - built ins, toy boxes, shelves and storage for the workshop mostly.  Eventually I will expand into other things, no doubt, but this is probably my project list for the next year.

Would you call the set vs domino on its own a no brainer to upgrade to the set?  How about the Domino Systainer Assortment, should I just start with the appropriate sized cutters and dominos for 1/2" and 3/4" material?

Appreciate any advice to be had!

Matt

Usually upgrading to a set is indeed a no brainer, the accessories that you get cost more alone than when the set is purchased. The cross stop alone is $65.00, the set is only (currently) $75.00 (USD) more than the Domino alone, and you also get the trim stop (another $65 USD item) - just get the set!

I bought the Domino assortment as well, figured I would have the various sizes to mess around with and then if I needed more of a certain size I could always get them separately.

Aftermarket, check out the Domniplate from Seneca Woodworking. Especially if you do a lot of 3/4" and 1/2"plywood work, this will save you set up time and improve accuracy and speed. http://www.senecawoodworking.com/products/domiplate-for-1-2-and-3-4-ply

Seneca also makes an Imperial thickness gauge that replaces the metric one on the Domino, but if you are using the Domniplate, at least for 1/2" amd 3/4" material, the replacement thickness gauge does not really help!

I have used the Domino just a few times, more or les just to try it out and see how it works. I think you will love it.

Oh, dust extraction is a must with the Domino, look into a package deal from your dealer on the tool and a vac, it will save you a few bucks.

Have fun!  :)

The assortment package does provide excellent value. However given your stated requirement you could have a lot of 'wasted' dominos. Perhaps a dealer might negotiate a deal that includes a discount on a box of one or both the sizes you intend to use most. Then perhaps they won't!? It will probably depend on their thoughts regarding your current or future relationship as a customer.

And yes you will need. Dust Ext.

The assortment is excellent value. I understand the point made by Untidy Shop based on your stated likely usage and my own experience but despite having used far more 8 and 10 mm dominos I still need the other sizes.

Apart from the assortment, the only other accessory that I would get is the Trim Stop which make repeated cuts in the end of pieces so easy. It can also be used a right angles for 'T' joints in rails.

Thanks for the advice, it sounds like the kit is a pretty good value overall assuming I eventually move into using other material, which I'm sure I will.  Not to mention the advantage of always knowing where the Domino's are located, prior to Festool I had begun moving my tools into Bosch L-BOXX's, and being organized in a similar way I've really begun to enjoy having everything setup this way.

I'll also look into the Domiplate, I watched a few videos and it does look like a great solution for someone like myself who is working with mostly 3/4", the price is also more reasonable than I had expected.

This is the exact information I needed to know, too.  Now if only I can find a new job before April 1, I'll be all set to buy that Domino 500 and Domino systainer set.   [big grin]

One question, if I may...

Any opinions on either one of these after market accessories?  Self Centering Guide Stop
