I am hoping I can get a domino setup guru to tell me why my brain can not solve this riddle - Attached is a crude drawing of  what I would like to accomplish. 45deg plank meets another - with a 45d edge - and I want to domino them together - I have a really good pile of scrap going already - trying to keep it from taking over the garage! Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks ahead of time for whatever jokes or direction ya can give me!

Do you want the dominos to be 90d like that?  You can either change the fence to be at a 45 degree and reference the left side of that workpiece. So the domino would be parallel with the top and bottom of the top workpiece.

bkharman - I tried that on a sample piece and can not seem to get the holes lined up - Would I need to clamp this all together somehow and cut both at the same time?

Can't you bevel both boards at 22.5, so you're not screwing around with adjusting the fence height?

You could do a through cut (if it isn't too deep).  I also would recommend the 22.5 degree recut of the two pieces so that the connection would be the same on all four domino cuts.

What is the aspect of the two parts you diagramed?  What is the final result for?

Cheers. Bryan

Draw the center line at the center of the 45°, set height and cut mortise.

+1

Its usually better to have the same angle on each piece, otherwise you have to figure out different fence heights and angles on the domino which is a recipe for alignment problems.

Cut them both at 22.5 so they match, then set the domino to 22.5 and cut both mortises with the fence on the inside face.

So let's assume for the moment, that you really want this to work in the way you've drawn. I personally do it as other have suggested. If there was some reason I needed this orientation and I didn't want to measure everything with a micrometer to get the accuracy I wanted for that corner, I might do the following:

- cut the bottom board a little long,
- cut the dominos leaving a little overhang on the bottom board,
- dry-fit everything,
- mark the bottom board where the top meets,
- use that mark to cut the bevel on the bottom board

todd_fuller,
Unfortunately, I have the boards all already cut to size. (drat!)
Mainly I just wanted these in for a little added strength and appearance.
I am going to try a sample later this week when I can try again - fastcap super glue the 2 pieces in place and then try to punch through both at once.... May just cause other issues.... Anyone foresee a new problem stemming from this idea?
Thanks again for all your suggestions.

I don't join 45's much, so I'm not sure what the problem is. However, I do remember that there is something about the Domino fence getting in the way when doing angles. There might be something about this in the Domino Supplementary Manual. It might be that the fence is being obstructed.

The only other thing I can think of is that it might be related to which face of each board you use to cut the Domino mortise.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

The drawing you have is more like a picture frame - The "corner" I am trying to get is 45 on one side and 135 on the other - Like the one 45 is being extended by another...    [huh] ... maybe lol

I don't think you're going to be able to accomplish the joint you're trying to make with the Domino. The face of the Domino machine and the bit are at 90 degrees. You would need a shim of some sort to get the angled cut you're trying to make. Even then, depth of the mortise would likely be an issue.

It's possible to invert the Domino and use the fence to get the right angle, but again, the depth of cut is an issue.

You can accomplish the same angle by doing two 22.5 degree cuts as already suggested.
