So I was doing a long panel glue-up (about 7 feet long) for a white oak plant stand.. I used standard biscuits for alignment. When I cut the panel to final length....I found this:

Oops.

So, since I still had the cutoff from that very same panel, I drilled out two small mortises with the domino, and made my own loose tenons with the scrap cutoff:

Some close-ups...the repair is only noticeable from a distance that's closer than anyone would ever see it:

Here's the finished product:

Not only is this a great idea (great save as Robert said) but it has been done so brilliantly - just look how close those end grains match the adjoining wood.

First class. Well done.

Now, try and get it right next time !  [wink]

One of my favorite mentors as I was learning my trade and well along after I knew it all  ::) used to say: "A good mechanic is one wh can talk his way out of any mistake he makes"  You have done one better.  You have worked your way out of a mistook.  I agree that one has to get very close to even recognize there is something amiss.  A truly great job.

Oh! And the final result overall is a great job as well.

I am working on a simple set of shelves with my grandson (whenever we can both be available at same time/same place).  I show him how to do each operation and then turn him lose. The shelves will be for display of his wrestling trophies.  I like your design (much better for the purpose) and will save for after he finishes his first attempt.  I think he could handle the more complicated project already.

Very nicely matched!!!  Must admit that I've managed to cut a piece right through the dominoes myself.  [mad]  My take-away on this was to leave all my pencil markings on the piece (especially those marking tenon locations) until it's fully dimensioned and assembled, then erase or sand them off, just to avoid doing this again.

Thanks guys for the nice comments. Yeah - hopefully this wont happen again! I was lucky to have the original scrap from that glue-up. Also lucky to have a domino!

Hey Peter,  it's cheap stuff from Harbor Freight. You can get them for $7.99 per 4-pack on sale, or use a 20% off coupon.

If there's no HF near you, you can order online:
http://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece-anti-fatigue-foam-mat-set-94635.html

Not the best quality, but fine after 3+ years and better than paying a lot more for something a little better.

secutanudu,
Just like magic!  Now you see it, now you don't!  I always felt that the true test of one's skill is how well they can fix a mistake and not have it noticed.

BTW, Nice looking plant stand!

You did a better cover-up job than the government. As nippychippy said, nice save!
