Domino side to side movement

Hi,

I am new to the Domino and started it using it very recently. On smaller (5mm) tenons I get no side to side movement, however when I use the 10mm x 50mm tenon size bits the Domino starts to move side to side, creating a poor mortise.

I am not currently using a dust extractor. Could the build-up of dust in the mortise account for this (somewhat extreme) side to side movement? Or is it more likely a poor grip etc.?

Thanks

Hi and [welcome] to the fog

the short awnser is you need extraction with the domino and it should be fine.

Welcome to the forum!

The simple answer is yes, it's because you're not using an extractor. The domino is designed to work with one, and it doesn't work as well without it. If there's nothing to clear the chips from the mortice, then there's no space for the bit to move through.

As for whether you're holding the machine tightly enough against the workpiece, you won't really know that until you eliminate the main issue of the lack of extraction.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

Welcome to the FOG.

You will also get a lot more grab from the larger  cutters, especially if you are plunging too fast.

[welcome] to the fog.
the problem is usually either no extraction or plunging incorectly.
1st get some dc in there , doesnt need to be festool [scared] a shop vac will do.
2nd mack sure you have the domino securly held against the piece and plung slowly.

At a Training section with Steve Bace, he taught me to (being right handed) hold it down with the left, Turn it on...then move my right hand to the end where the cord is and push from slowly from the back of the unit. That makes less chance of lifting or pushing down with the right hand. Also that is why it has a power switch that locks on.

I was new to the Domino and all the guys that had them had a  [doh]  moment and and said "Of course" now I know my problem.

Festool training is worth it!!!

Cheers,
Steve
