Domino - Table Legs and Aprons

Just got my Domino and for the first project I want to join the aprons to the legs for a small table I'm building.  I am trying to figure out a way to index the mortises for the legs and aprons.  The mortises in the leg will begin about 3/8" from the end as is the corresponding mortise in the apron.  So using the pins is not an option.  Layout lines and oversize mortises do not appeal to me as an option.  Has anyone come up with a jig or idea for a "can't miss" setup for indexing closer the cutter?

Why aren't layout lines an option?  They seem like the best solution to me.

The only other thought is a milled spacer block you could insert between the closest pin and the edge of the board -- this would move the mortise closer to the edge.

A MILLED SPACER BLOCK!!!  Of course. Why couldn't I think of that?  Thanks for helping this idiot out.  I was hoping to avoid layout lines because that always becomes somewhat of any eye test, and when doing multiples there are lots of chances of mistakes.

Len their isnt alot you can do apart from mark out lines. This has been a hot topic on another forum for a good while. All sorts of ideas have poped up, jigs made, but none seem to be realy effective.

But now that Domi has reached the States im hoping some fresh minds will come up with a sutable solution. What ever it is it has to be retractable alowing the machine to plunge left and right in quick succession.

I wish the pins were located to mortice for a 50mm rail instead of the 74mm it is set for now. It is a big fault of the Domino in my view and i have no idea why Festool made it that distance

I have been thinking of taking mine to a good machinist and seeing if the pins could be removed and placed exactly where the little rubber stops are, because if you look behing the fence their is room and it would be around the 50mm mark.

In the mean time the little gauge i made below suits me fine. I use it every day and find its perfect for my needs. It marks both 20 and 25mm. Good luck with what you come up with and keep us posted ;D

Thats a good site Dave. Interesting he says the presets are 8, 16, 20, 22, 25, 36 and 40 mm am i missing something as mine is 14, 16, 20 ect. Confused ???

Thanks for tips!  I cut the mortises today using the spacer stick to locate them 6mm from the end of the leg ant top of the apron and then used the chart to set the offset per the instructions in the link you supplied.  After I got it all figured out it took less than 10 minutes to cut 16 mortises.  Everything came out perfect.  Worked like a trained pig.  Thanks again

My bad - mixing "presets to stock thickness centerline" with distance from Fence To Mortise Centerline"

If you slide the "stepped center on stock thickness" preset back past "16" and push the fence down as far as it will go you'll be at 7mm fence to mortise center line.
