Domino XL 700. Are the Accessory Systainers with tenons & cutters good value? No

I just purchased a Domino XL 700 and did some calculation to see if the (8mm/10mm and 12mm/14mm) tenon assortment Systainers with the included cutters are a good value vs buying the individual cutters and tenon packs.

Here are my findings. They are not. IMHO.

I found that in the US the value of the cutters and tenons in the 8mm/10mm systainer is $237 vs the $330 cost of the Systainer assortment pack. You are therefore paying $94 for the systainer.

The value of the tenons and cutter in the 10mm/14mm systainer is $160 vs the $300 cost, so you are paying $140 for the sustainer. It's even worse if you end up with a bunch of tenons sizes that you don’t use.

I am rather surprised and thought Festool would give a better value for buying the assortment systainers. Not so.

My method:
Because the number of tenons included in the sustainer is different than what you can buy in the individual tenon packs I calculated the unit cost per tenon in each individual tenon pack and then multiplied each tenon cost times the number included in the assortment systainer.

Example:  A bag of 8x22x50 tenons cost $25 for 100.  The Systainer gives you 49 of that size. So $25/100= $0.25 per tenon times the 49 in the Systainer equals a value for that size tenon of $12.50.

8mm/10mm Systainer cost $330 and includes the following tenons & cutters. 
(allow for some minor rounding of the numbers)

    • 8x22x50 (49X) $25/100  $0.25ea 49= $12.25 
    • 8x22x80 (38X) $61/190  $0.33ea 38= $12.50 
    • 8x22x100 (36X) $61/150  $0.40ea 36= $15.50 
    • 10x24x50 (82X) $25/85    $0.31ea 82= $25.60 
    • 10x24x80 (52X) $61/150  $0.40ea 50= $20     
    • 10x24x100 (53X) $61 /20    $0.51ea 53= $27     
    • Cutter 8 mm         $61
    • Cutter 10 mm                       $63
      Total for cutters and tenons  $237 
                                                    ($330 - $237) = $93 for the Systainer

12mm/14mm Systainer costs $300 and includes;

    • 12x26x100 (41X) $61/100  $0.61ea 41= $25     
    • 12x26x140 (40X) $61/90  $0.68ea 40=  $27     
    • 14x28x100 (16X) $61/80  $0.76ea 16=  $12.20 
    • 14x28x140 (32X) $61/70  $0.87ea 32=  $ 28     
    • Cutter 14 mm                         $67
                  Value of tenons and cutter  $160   
                                      ($300 - $160) = $140 for the Systainer

The empty Systainer for dominos (includes storage bins with dividers) is $99. 

Sounds like the 8mm/10mm Systainer is a slight win ($6), but the 12mm/14mm Systainer is not ($41 loss).

Overall, I agree that one should just buy the bits and dominos as needed and get a Systainer for dominos to store them.  It's not a win to buy the combinations.

Some people will buy the pre-packaged assortments and some will buy bits, parts, and pieces separately.  Cardboard boxes hold things just like Systainers or other plastic boxes do.

Guess that there are more than one way to peel a potatoe.

When I bought the 500 I also bought the assortment.  When I bought the 700 I bought the all various size cutters from CMT and bought all the sizes in the 750mm lengths.  It is very easy to cut the lengths needed and less likely to end up with sizes that will be unused.  I usually make a jig and cut them with a Dozuki saw.  If I ever needed massive quantities I would cut them with my chop saw.

Since I also bought the Seneca adapter, I got the Domino 500 assortment, too, so I have available all the cutters and all of the Domino sizes so almost any situation is covered. Since then, I only buy the Dominos in the sizes I find I am actually using to re-stock.

I just recently got the 500’s assortment from Amazon.de.  I ordered on a Saturday and received them the following Saturday.  I saved about a third off the US prices.

I would advise everyone to shop around as I was able to buy the systainers with dominos and cutters for less than the cost of the items bought separately. Also, people should use their buying power to get a discount - for example, when I bought my Domino 500 from Axminster 8 years ago I said that I wanted the systainer with the dominos and I then negotiated a discount.

So, well done Ross for the homework but those prices quoted can be beaten.

Hi,

I can’t speak for the 700-Systainer.

But I have already purchased 2 Domino-Assortment Systainers for the 500.
Since the cutters are included in the Systainer you get:
- Set of cutters
- Set of Dominos
- Systainer

I was able to get the last one for around 120€.
No way to get everything included for this price.
...but you need to shop around, obviously. [emoji41]

I think  that, whether the 700's assortment set with systainer makes sense, depends, to some degree on if you will use the largest cutters/Dominos on a regular basis. If not, it might make more sense to buy the larger 10mm and 12mm cutters separately and buy the 3' long Domino stock for those.

I agree...for the DF 500 set:
Domino's = $119
Cutters = $220
Systainer = $99

So that comes out to a $438 value for $330

An update to my recent post regarding the Domino 500 Accessory Systainer.

I purchased the set on 11/10 for $187.08 USD inclusive of shipping (received in 7 days). This was a savings of $142.92 or 43% from the $330 it would have cost had I purchased the set from a US retailer.

Strange...I had no problem ordering the assortments from them. They shipped via DHL and I had them in about a week. Perhaps something has changed since it became well-known that folks in the US were ordering these supplies from "over there" to save bundles of money over US fixed pricing.

There are different vendors at Amazon.de, some ship others don't, it pays to check the other options available for the item, even at Amazon.us.  Very often the original search vendor does not but the optional ones will.  I ordered the Duo and STL tripod $60+  cheaper but none offered the STL and tripod bag.

Yes, something will change if you keep discussing how to circumvent Festool retail policy on Festool OWNED website. After much publicity on FOG they went after Axminster and others, which used to ship Festool products to US, and they will go after other retailers. So, thanks, keep at it [sarcasm].

When I bought my DF500 the assortment systainer with the bits and dominos was about as expensive as just the bits. So that was an easy choice.

But if buying separate is cheaper; go at it. Very strange though if that is cheaper.

Sometimes certain deals simply don't make much sense. Like I bought a 30 kg printer from the USA for 1/4 it would cost here. Then I paid the same amount to get it shipped, still saving 50%...
