Domino XL connectors material thickness

I am planning a project with XL connectors but curious if anyone has used them on 4/4 boards by laminating extra material to where the connectors mortise. It would not visible except on the interior. I don't see why this wouldn't work and it should be just as strong as starting with 30mm thick boards.
