Domino XL to U.S.?

I was going to buy a Domino cutter this week but saw that there is a new version coming to the UK this month.  When is it coming to USA?  Is Festool going to keep both sizes?  Does the XL version do dominos as small as the old version?

The XL is a much larger machine for larger Domino tenons.  Not replacing the original Domino tool, but an addition.  It'll be here when it gets here.  Don't be impatient.  [big grin]

Here are the answers to your questions:

Yes, Festool will continue to offer both the current Domino in addition to the new Domino XL. The XL is designed for applications that require much larger tenons such as large furniture construction, custom doors, etc. The XL does not do the smaller mortises like the current Domino, it will do 8/10/12/14mm mortises if I recall correctly.

As for an ETA, it's hard to say at this point but I expect mid-2012. There's a pinned thread in the Festool Tools section of the forum where I update ETAs on new tools:

Thanks everyone.  I have many uses for the small dominos so I think i will stick with the original version.  Plus I imagine the Domino XL will have an XL price.  I conned my wife into letting me get this one! [big grin] Sounds like the domino is worth every penny.

Although there is no ETA for the Domino XL machine and larger Domino tendons in the USA, I have made it clear to my favorite local Festool dealer that I will buy the machine with all the necessary bits and a supply of the XL Dominoes themselves.

Perhaps Shane or someone can tell me if the XL will use longer Dominoes than the Domino 500? I see both have 8mm and 10mm, but perhaps the XL Dominoes will be wider and longer.

As it is I hardly ever use 10mm Dominoes, but I have products I want to prototype which would benefit from wider and longer Dominoes. I do own a fairly new floor mounted dedicated mortising machine which can use 25mm set up. I would not think of trying mortises thicker than 14mm hand held, but I have faith in Festool and a jug of green Kool Aide.

My friends in Europe agree with you, that the XL Domino will make far deeper mortises and will use cutters up to 14mm dia.

What is still less clear to me is if the XL will use longer 8mm and 10mm bits. Half of 140mm is 70mm, which would seem ambitious for a 12mm cutter. But it might well be practical to make 8mm mortises deeper with a longer cutter than the current Domino 500.

It also is unclear if for the XL Domino there will be 8mm and 10mm tendons longer and wider than the current ones we use with the Domino 500. The current 8mm Dominoes are all 22mm wide, in a choice of 40mm and 50mm length. Currently the 10mm Dominoes are 24mm wide by 50mm long.

Perhaps the XL Domino will oscillate more, to use even wider tendons and still allow the extra width like current style. Probably a 12mm and 14mm Domino would be best wider than 24mm. Personally I expect the XL Domino machine will require a dedicated set of cutters, possibly with shanks more like 12.7mm than 8mm just to be robust.

Yeah, but how often are you going to do that, and when you do you can just cut down a regular tenon.  Maybe there's some other use we aren't aware of till we see one the XL's doing it's thing.

My guess is that as there are so many options size wise, that you would need to hold a large inventory where as with a length you can cut to suit.

I cannot wait for this to be released here. So many bigger applications where this will be a great alternative to a router or dedicated machine.  I love the three adjustable pins on the fence for spacing mortises close to an edge.
