Dominoes Outdoors?

I am going to be building a walnut table for my deck (in upstate NY).
I know they make sipo dominoes for outdoor use, but I have bags of regular (both beech and oak) dominoes I would like to use up.
It seems to me that they are buried in a joint, covered with waterproof glue and then with varnish.  How much exposure do they really have; is sipo really necessary?
I don't want to ruin a project because I was too cheap to buy the right fastener, but neither do I want to waste $40.

I had a similar thought when the Sipo ones were introduced - if the joint is sound, and securely glued, why would the domino need to be anything other than standard beech?

I would guess that depends on the amount of sun and weather the table is exposed to.  Under a porch roof, probably no problem.  Out in the yard where the sun and driving rains are - more maintenance to the finish will be required.  As long as the finish is sound, you are probably okay.  Even redwood and cedar will fail if not maintained.

What is "sipo" ?

It is a weather resistant hardwood.

Yes, it's a type of Mahogany.

I remember reading that is possible for the beach tenons to rot fairly quickly inside the joint when exposed to harsh weather. I don't have experience with this but I did just buy the sipo tenons for an upcoming project.

Anyone know if the sipo's are available in 4mm?

I haven't seen any 4mm sipos.

I have a couple of sipo assortment packs left. One of them would only cost $31, not $40, and might get you where you need to be. It depends on how many you need and of what size(s).

I looked at your website and it is worse than I thought.  I need about 100 6mm, so it will be $74+.  I suppose I could use a mix of 5, 6, and 8mm just to get by.

Do you happen to recall if that's the same assortment they were packaging with the Domino when they came out last spring?  I'd have to check when I get home, but the one you pointed to looks like it comes with more dominos.

It is the same one. I got several thinking they'd be a hot item for people just dipping their toe in the water (or water resistant Domino pool). As it turned out, a couple are still here?
