I'm going to butt join a 1/2" thick shelf into a 1/2" thick side board and I'm wondering if I can use Dominos and if so, what size?

Yes, use 4mm tenons, which are the equivalent of 5/32". So, that's roughly 1/3 the thickness of 1/2", which is the rule of thumb for tenons.

Maybe a dumb question, but does the length matter, since it's going into a 1/2" thick side?

Brain fart, Tom's right the 4mm cutter is too short to blow through 1/2" material.

Note that the 4mm cutter is shorter than the other cutters, so adjust accordingly because the depth gauge will be inaccurate.

The 4mm will only plunge 10 mm deep. You set the Domino on 20, the cutter is only 10mm.

1/2" is about 13mm.

It's a pretty simple shelf/cubby unit that will be holding some antique clocks that aren't very heavy.  I'm using a driftwood stain to make it look like weathered wood.  It's all cheap pine.  Construction is very simple.
