DTS 400 REQ edge guard

I own a ro90 and pro 5 ltd and both came with edge guards.  The ro90 edge guard sands right up to the 90 degree corner and the pro 5 can only sand to about 1/4" from the corner and I have to hand sand or use the ro90 to finish.  The pro 5 is more like the window guard kit I purchased for my ro90.  I am considering buying the new DTS 400 REQ with edge guard to go with my older RTS 400 that does not have the edge guard.  Does the edge guard for the new DTS 400 sand right up to the edge like the ro90 or does it sand more like the Pro5 leaving a 1\4" unsanded.

Sort of.... The guard is open at the 'point' of the Delta Pad, so you can sand into corners, but, the spacing on the sides of the sander with the guard is pretty far away. I haven't measured it, but at least 1/4" or 6mm sounds about right with my sander not in front of me to verify it.

I would buy those newly updated sanders.  Unwanted sanding marks and uneven wear on the abrasives and pads is reduced by these guards and you can always pop them off to get closer.

They are more money in tools and sanding sheets but wear very differently compared to the RO90 which has a diagonal pad as an add on and extension.  It's not as effective as the dedicated tool.  Still, a great tool and it can accomplish different tasks, but I have experienced expensive pad wear and always find myself needing more abrasives.

I can't comment on the edge sanding offset as I have the older models without the guards.  I love the Festool Sanders but don't waste your money on the drills.

Cheers, Sam

Thanks.  That is the information I was looking.  It's disappointing that it does not sand to edge like my ro90.  I use the guard a lot and it saves the pad, paper and the other surface from damage.  It may not seem like a big deal to festool but for me it may be a deal breaker. I already have an older RT400 that I use on every job. It may be my most used sander.  The banging against edges is the only issue I have with the sander but I have learned to minimize it with technique.  Spending $260 for a sander that will still bang the edges is to much for me.  If festool would make a true edge guard accessory for my pro5 and the 400 series sanders I would buy it.

Have someone measure it for you or take a picture and post it here on FOG before we get carried away with the Sander and its edge guard..
