My wife and I just bought a house so my woodworking will be moving from a separate building to the basement.  So I was looking to upgrade my dust collector to one that filters out finer dust and maybe a little more quiet than my older Delta.

I was looking at 2 hp portable cyclones from Laguna and Oneida, but I am open to others if any of you have a favorite. Maybe I don't understand the specs, but the Laguna showed 1600cfm and Oneida was only 890. Seemed like a big difference for machines that are both the same horsepower.

Anyone have any experiences with either of these machines or other recommendations?

Thanks
Tom

I know I've read good things about them, but I was looking for something portable.

JDS Tools models are made by the same company as Laguna's, but are under more intense quality control. Virtually the same as the Laguna models, but cheaper and free shipping.

You might also consider their air filtration systems in tandem with the DC...especially in a basement shop.

Here are the links to the 2HP portable cyclone and the air filtration.

JDS Air-Tech HP Air Filtration System

Good Luck with your choice. [big grin]

Be careful with those CFM rating as I think many companies skew the information.

If you already have a 1.5-2 HP collector you might consider getting an inline cyclone for better collection at a fraction of the cost.

Companies mess with CFM Ratings and it can be misleading.

What you want to look for is:

-Size of impeller
- Motor Size
- Inlet diameter

I have a customer with a Dust Collector which pulls 5000CFM according to the specs and has big massive bags. He sold it after 4 months cause his hsip was full of dust.

Keep in mind Cyclones are typically very, very noisy as well.

I have built one of the cyclones in the link below to my own spec and it is fantastic. Could probably be added in-line to what you currently have as someone has already suggested. I only use mine on a Festool CT26.

If you want to know any more, let me know. I'd also be interested if anyone else on here has built one and their experience.

I can't think of the model number, but I have a two stage Delta dust collector now. It's the model where the motor and impeller sit on a steel drum and it has a fabric bag for fine dust. I was looking to replace it with another two stage collector that has a stronger suction and collects finer dust. I still want to be able to roll it to the machines.

I did look at the JDS. Woodcraft has the Laguna on sale for less than $1300, while the JDS is about $1500. The only reservation I have about buying the JDS is I can't see one before hand.
