So, I've been salivating over the Domino for a while and I've been saving my pennies to obtain one. Right now (at this writing) the Canadian dollar is nearly on par with the American dollar. So in order to save myself a few bucks, when this equal dollar value occurs, I like to drive from Toronto to Buffalo to get some Festo products. Before I left home I gave Rockler a call and asked the gentleman there to check inventory for a domino - he said that they had one in stock.
4 hours later I walk into Rockler and ask for a domino, the man behind the desk says "Your not the guy from Toronto are you?" I said said "Yes, why?" "Because we don't have what you want in stock. Sorry - but the new Woodcraft across town may have one..."
So about 45 minutes later I walk into Woodcraft and ask for the domino. "Yes we have one let me go get it." five minutes later he comes out from the stock room with the domino in the systainer. I take it out and sure enough they were selling the discontinued domino model at FULL PRICE! I then continued to school them about the upgraded face plate - they had no clue , then they offered to ship one to me in Canada - then I had to school them about Festools restrictions on shipping to Canada. He tried to knock the price down for me but F- that! I want the upgraded one for that price! What is the Festool dealer in Buffalo doing?

This is what I did with my Thanksgiving day off.

Thanks Rockler and Woodcraft

Sad to hear that you are disappointed. However, I believe you should have went for the old style domino - most people I have talked to prefer that version. The new version is said to be an evolution, and perhaps in some aspects it is. But the main reason for changing the design of the domino is a lawsuit from Mafell.

hi m@, i certainly know how you feel. i have done a couple of 2.5 hour trips to brisbane for nothing. same reason as you.
it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth for sure.
i now get all my festool toys shipped from sydney, 1000km's south!

btw, i have just ordered a brand new shiny domino, delivery tomorrow.
its gonna be a sleepless night. like christmas without the snow!

regards, justin.

Hi Mat,

I'm also living in Canada and I've bought a lot of my Festool in the USA.
I would suggest you that you do a little search on the web for forwarding places near your border. These places will receive your packages on your behalf for a minor fee (less then 5$ usually) and will keep it safe for you there. Then you just have to drive over there, get your package, and go through the customs. Now since Festools are made in germany you will just have to pay 5% GST if its a commercial import or GST + PST if its a personal import. THERE ARE NO DUTIES and I did it plenty of times. 100% fully legal.

Cheers,

Alex

ditto the point about the older model.

I think the pins are a much better way to use the tool, and actually offer more versatility.

I also am happy with the old style pins and see no reason to change.

I also have not seen the newer model on display here in Charlotte Woodcraft...they still had the original model last week when I got my 4mm stuff and the new support plate.

Best,
Todd

Matthew,
I live between both those stores in NY.
Both of them are pretty clueless at times.
On the flip side.........
I have driven to Bloor (sp) street in Toronto, and had the same thing happen to me at a model train store !!
I have learned to make sure they physically check stock, the item, and have them hold it behind the counter .
Let me know if I can help you out.
John
