EKAT and Java

I'm somewhat of a computer geek and it's been all over the news about how bad Java is for for computer security. I've uninstalled it on my machine, it's a disaster waiting to happen

Even Homeland Security recommends disabling it: Firefox and Apple have Blocked Java While U.S. Homeland Security Recommends Everyone Disable It, Because of Vulnerabilities

That's just the first Google result, this was back in January but every week there are new reports of unpatched vulnerabilities and Oracle keeps dragging their feet on updates.

So are there any plans to update EKAT to a more secure platform? It's a major PITA to have to install Java to find a part and then uninstall it afterwards, be nice if Festool would advance into the 21st century Internet.

not being a computer expert of any sorts, what is the new recommendation to replace java with, I would guess it would be something similar but more secure. Am I right.

HTML 5 app would be a guess. The problem is that Java was never intended for Web applications, keeps getting more complicated, more features added with not enough regard for security. Oracle gives it away, there's no profit incentive to improve security. They boast of being on 5 million devices and fail to secure the platform, not good. Do some Googling, it'll scare the pants off you.

Shane, I'm hoping Festool comes out with a replacement but not holding my breath. It's easy enough to disable if you know your way around your browser tools but for the average user it's just something a web page says they need so they install it. Even if you disable it every update re-enables it so then you need to disable it again. Not to mention it installs crapware by default(Ask Toolbar).

Calling the service dep't. is your best bet.

The EKAT is administered and maintained by Germany. I'd be happy to contact them to see if there are any plans to update the platform, but there are none that I'm aware of.

In the interim, it's easy to enable and disable Java as needed if you feel it's a risk. Or, call the service department for assistance with identifying and ordering spare parts.

Hi

I was browsing the EKAT on my Ipad (no Java) and noticed that the MFT/3 part. 495314 shows up fine on the first page but not when you click the images. Maybe it's a jpeg on the first page. Why not do the same with the other tools? I guess it would be quite easy to turn the diagrams into jpegs?
