Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel - thinning for 4 Turbine Fuji with T75G gun

So here is where I'm  at with this;  I have thinned a quart of EUTE with 11oz's of thinner (5oz Floetrol and 6oz of tap water) and I still can't get the #4 Ford cup to empty under 50 seconds.  I've put the thinner in at stages and checked each stage by the ford cup.  All I am trying to do is get it under 50 sec's -  I will be shooting some test pieces over the weekend; Maybe, if the Phoenix heat drops below 90 degrees.  My spray rig is a Fuji MiniMite4 with a T75G gun using the 3M PPS 2.0 with a 2.0mm air cap/needle. I have successfully sprayed SW Super paint with a ford cup time of 40 seconds with a 1.8mm air cap/needle.  So now what?  Thin with more water?  Add more paint and bring the Ford Cup time up to 80 seconds - the Fuji reference says with a 2.0mm air cap, the cup empty time can be up to 80 seconds.  This is pricy paint and I have no desire to toss the mix and start all over.

Floetrol is not a thinner. Replace the 5 oz of Floetrol with water, see if the Ford 4 time improves. You’re at ~33% thinning, sheen and color may be affected at this point.

You may have to go the the 2.0 air cap set, I’d shoot it through the 2.0 somewhere around 60 seconds.

Forgot to mention you can warm the can to decrease viscosity of the paint. 100ºF is doable in hot water bath.

Thanks Tom.  I added another ounce of water and the Ford cup emptied in 60 seconds.  All that is left is to spray some test wood and see how it comes out.  I'll report back with the spray results.  Looks like it will be the end of next week before I can get at it.

So with the EUTE thinned so as to empty the Ford cup in 60 Seconds, I tried to spray it today on some test pieces.  Using the 2.0mm Air Cap/Needle the paint would NOT flow well.  I got a lot of spitting. I opened the needle up some more and it still spit.  So I dumped the paint back in the can and attempted to thin it further.  Eventually getting it to empty the Ford Cup in 33 seconds AND STILL HAD SOME SPITTING PROBLEMS.  So, I yanked the 2.0mm tip out and cleaned my gun and threw in a 1.5mm Air Cap/needle set.  No change, it still spit.  This paint will not flow smoothly at 30 seconds ford cup.  I'm getting to the point where I might have to roll it on my cabinet.  My buddy has an HVLP Compressor system so I may give that a try later.  But for now, I'm going to try my new, never been sprayed, Aerojet AS1 HVLP spray gun - supposedly a "Fuji Knockoff".

I'm using the 3m PPS 2.0 system and I can see the cup is collapsing the liner normally so I think it is pressurizing normally.  Thanks

I have the same setup and i use a 1.7 tip without the black air flow valve and use the 3MPPS. Runs fine with emerald with it thinned with water to meet the flow cup requirements listed in the manual. I feel like 33% is high though.

Thanks for your input.  I brought the Fork Cup time back up to 80 seconds - Fuji recommendation.  By bringing the viscosity  level back up I think I've probably have a thinned ratio of north of 24% but that would be a WAG.  I'll be spraying that new batch over the weekend in my Buddies HVLP Compressor system.  I sent my T75G spray gun off to Phelps Refinishing to have the gun go thru some ultrasound cleaning system.  I've been having trouble turning the Fan Pattern Control - it's like it is all gummed up or I would spray it out of my Fuji MiniMite4. instead of my buddys'
