Entry doors with the Domino?

Hi Eiji,

I'm sure that the Domino joints offer enough strength and stability for a entry door. However, I would hesitate to use beech Dominos/dowels/biscuits for outdoor applications. In Europe, Festool introduced SIPO Dominos for outdoor projects. I don't know if they are already available in the USA but they would be my choice for an entry door. Alternatively, I'd use shop-made Dominos from oak for example.

Hope this helps,

Christian

Christian,

Thanks for the reply. I will be using mahogany tenons.

Why would the beech tenons be a major problem outdoors?  I have used beech biscuits outdoors and have had no problems.  In my earlier days, I even built a garage door with them that is still holding up.  I would think that if the tenons are enclosed, there would be no problem.  I have a few outdoor projects in mind that the Domino would be perfect for.  Do you think that I would experience swelling with the beech dominos?  Thanks

I agree with Kevin on this one, if the tenons are not through with the domis exposed and the outside surface of the wood is finished or treated then I would not see any problems with them being outside...

Sorry, I can't offer any links to English books/information/etc. on this subject but I've read several German articles (some of them were quite scientific and published by universities) that explained why beech in general and beech dowels/biscuits in particular shouldn’t be used for outside projects.
"Reliable resources" reported that beech dowels and biscuits rot very quickly (within five years) – even if they are completely enclosed and not exposed.

Regards,

Christian
