Hi. Bought 150/3, my first sander ever. Is this normal that im capable to stop disk rotation with hand without problem, even when its set to full speed at 6 ? I thought it should rotate harder. I also think it rotate more when its stuck with disk against something flat, then when in rotate in air.

Is this normal behavior?

I'm sure the other more knowledgeable guys will respond but in my case, with my own 150/3, I noticed similar. I don't recall it occurring as much when I was using a 150/5 this summer. I didn't think it might be an issue until your point.

Hehe, you described the whole idea behind a random orbital sander [smile] The disc merely 'wobbles' in 3mm circles, the disk rotation starts the moment it touches the surfaces. If you are able to stop the rotation it means you're pushing way too hard. Merely the weight of your palm holding it (without any pressure) is enough to let it do its job. Mind you, 3mm is a finish sander and you won't see much abrasive action compared to a 5mm stroke, let alone a geared sander like the Rotex.

Normal behavior is to not press down hard on the sander...let it do its work and that doesn't require a lot of pressure. Excessive pressure also creates heat which will make your interface pad degrade more quickly and that means it will stop holding the abrasive discs securly over time. So yes, "normal" means you can stop it in its tracks if you press down hard.

Here's a video by Larry Smith which contains a ton of proper sanding techniques for the ETS 150 and also the Rotex 150. Your question is answered within the first minute of the video.
