Feature Wall

I am starting this project late September and thought I would post the drawings and some of the details here.

As you can see there is a door in the middle of the wall that allows access to a passageway that has some closets and storage a den as well as an interior door to the garage.

The wall faces a dinning room that is flanked by the two pillars you see in the photo.

The client wanted to turn this wall in their home into a "feature" wall by adding some ledger stone and wood paneling.

I submitted 2 designs, one without a door and one with a "hidden" door.

The client picked the design with the hidden door. I will be using some Soss Invisible closers and hinges for the door. The paneling will be Ash in ebony.

If you haven't heard of the Tectus hinges yet, (there is also a version by Sugatsune,) you might want to check them out as an alternative to the Soss.

If you really need the self closing feature, a Rixon pivot would be easy to put in with that wood floor.

I read the ThisisCarpentry article when it first came out and like that system. I looked at Tectus, Sugatsune and Rixon but because of the self closer feature that I sold to the client I believe I am going to have to use the Soss. I would really prefer to use a Tectus hinge but with 3 children in the family and fair amount of traffic in the closets that door is going to be left open a lot if there is not self closing feature. The door is going to be a left swinging door so I believe I am ok with the offset to the inside of the door which will allow me to add the paneling and still get a "flush" invisible door.

It has been suggested that I use a solid wood, (not chip board) stave core door for this application.

Here is a video of the hidden door, just before I put the last panels in.
The wall is mostly finished now just in time for Xmas, a few finish details to complete. Then on to the stair landing panels.

I used two different approaches for the wall and the door. The 3/4" panels are hung on the wall with monarch mf250-Z- clips. The space between the panels is 3/8" so the mf250 with a 1/4" lift off work well. I glue 1/4" thick reveal strips on the wall with PL 200 and pin to hold while the glue sets. I shim out the wall using some glazier shims that come in 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4" thicknesses.

I originally ordered a 1 3/8" stave core (solid) door but the supplier ordered a 1 3/4" door which with the addition of the panels and revel strips was going to make for a very thick door.
I decided to route the revel strips into the door and then have the door hang flush with the 1/4" strips mounted to the wall. This saved some thickness on the door but it still ended up a 2 1/2" thick with the panels.
The Panels on the door are shimmed out with wood and glued with PL 200 and pinned with a 23 gauge pin. The 23 gauge pins allow me to adjust the panels. I may have to put some 16 gauge nails on those panels to hold it on the door.

Yep, this project was/is challenging and kicked my #ss.
