Hi All

I had a look at the new Festool Centrotec screwdriver and ratchet set and saw an odd looking socket that I have never seen before. The best way to describe it is an "eye" shaped hole (when looking down the business end) in the socket. Is this some special Festool tool?

Wild guess, here:
Could this be for driving thumbscrews, eye hooks, etc?

We don't have that set here, but I suspect Jesse is right. Is it this:

It's not that bad, Ron... it only drives Metric eye hooks  [tongue]

Jolly handy little tool it is to.

Here that tool would primarily be used for inserting lags into wooden framing to allow hanging of suspended ceilings.  Is there a common other usage on your side of the pond?

Of course there is- they use it to install the hooks for their teacups.  You know how they love tea over there......

Ok, finally took a moment to pull out the socket set and look at it. It's for using hex driver bits, included with the set, with your socket.

Not sure why it's oblong shaped, instead of exactly hex.

Sorry for the poor photo quality.

Could it be so both the U.S. and Centrotec bits fit in it?

Shane,

Either Festool manufacturing had a broaching problem or it's made to handle rounded (damaged) fastener heads is what I'm thinkin'.

I have a good collection of the weirdest bits including security bits, yet I don't remember ever seeing a type like that design.

I'm wrong.  I have one.  Hang on for the pictures.

This is my Wiha (made in Germany) security bit set I got from Grainger.

It's the 1/4" drive adapter and I have no idea why they designed it that way.  Maybe they know something Snap-On doesn't?

In the two oblong sides, there are bit retention clips.  That's the reason behind this design as opposed to the typical ball detent and c-ring style.

What did I win?  [tongue]
