I recently noticed that the specification for the series of Festool brad point bits from 492512 - 492518 has been changed. They're still manufactured from HSS but they now include the phrase "Drills made from high-alloyed ball bearing steel".

What's really unusual is that in 2 different places in the description, Festool says the drill bits are suitable to use on "metal". I assume by metal they mean aluminum.

I've ground the spurs off of several HSS brad point drill bits and have used them on aluminum...the brad point didn't stay sharp for very long, 3-4 holes and the point had to be reground.  [sad]

Has anyone used this newer generation bit on aluminum?

Probably a clerical error.  The German site (according to Chrome auto-translate) says:

For drilling in all types of wood, glued wood, MDF and acrylic glass

No mention of metal on the .de site.

Same with the Australian site, no mention of metal, just 'wood, glued wood, MDF and acrylic'.

Thanks for that guys... [big grin]...I didn't even think of going to a different site. That makes complete sense.

However, a part of me really wanted this Festool drill bit to do an impossible task.  [wink]

There is a new CE HSS drill bit set out here in Europe, #577402.
These differ from the previous models where you could change the drill bits with an Allen screw.
