Festool Contractor's First Aid Systainer

Found some interesting facts regarding the green cross, and especially the red-cross, symbols.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_aid#Symbols

The green cross (as on the Europe-based first aid kit) is the international symbol of first aid.

Here in the US, the red cross is (at least in my experience / lifetime) nationally recognized as the first aid symbol.

But apparently the red cross on a white background is a protected emblem.

Festool seems in the clear here, since they have a white cross on red latches.

Interesting info, thanks!

After picking up an LS130 in the refurb sale I decided not to buy anymore classic systainers...then the first aid kit came out.  I stuck to my guns and decided to make my own with a red latch.  It's not quite filled yet but is ready for small cuts or burns:

Just what I had in mind. Thanks for showing this. Didn't know about the alternatives...

Off topic from the first aid kits aspect, but related to the red versus green and safety...

A number of years ago when I was a Construction Project Manager for a big box retailer I handled construction projects all over the U.S. and experienced the different localities' requirements.  Exit signs were one of those things that would often come up in inspections at the last moment.  Every inspector seemed to have his own take on the number and placement.  We attempted to think in advance, and I had pre-ordered a number of self powered (uranium) exit signs that we stored at our headquarters.  That way if we heard that the inspector at the last minute wanted more, we could overnight them where they needed to go, and the next morning they could be installed by the GC without needing electricity run and we would be in business.

But then there was a location in Ohio.  Most localities recognize red exit signs.  Not this one.  Green.  And to top that, not only did you have to have one over the exit door, but you also had to have one located at about 3 feet off of the floor on either side of the door so that if you had a customer crawling on the floor to escape the smoke they could find the exits.

I am not criticizing their logic, just pointing out the differences.

I look back at those days fondly now that I am not scrambling to make those types of things happen.

And then there was Washington state...

Some really helpful info has been posted.

Thanks Wood_Junkie for the links they had great information and were interesting to read.

I agree that we all need to customize the contents of our own kit to fit our needs (maybe I should say, personal clumsiness).

I like the current US first aid kit. I as many here have added some additional items to the kit.

Being a licensed firearms instructor teaching to the public and to police departments. The topic of first aid comes up. I have talked at length to many Paramedics. Their thoughts are, a few items are better than nothing, the average Joe will never have everything, that is what 911/ Paramedics are for.

The first point Paramedics make is this, do you have a charged Cell phone (and do you know your location address in detail that emergency services will understand  - Bob’s house is not enough) if you don’t have cell service do you have access to a land line or a satellite phone. The second is what is your location? In a metro area with 3 - 5 minute response time. Your kit can be small, but being that I live in MN, if you are out in the rural areas you can be 30+ minutes out from help and need to have a much bigger kit.

My main issue with the current US Festool first aid kit is that it is not labeled on all sides.  Being it is a classic systainer, the side latches should also be the red with white. I would also like to see stickers on all sides so you can tell it is your first aid kit from the side or the back or the top and maybe even the bottom.

After reading the links posted here I just Googled first aid stickers and found many stickers one was http://www.firstaidsuppliesonline.com/nav.pl?cat=NavFirstAidKit&prod=S-53.

If I was to make buy my own systainer for first aid, I would find an all green one and add the stickers I found on the web.  If I was doing this in quantity I would have they systiners labeled in a permanent manner on all sides. I would also offer empty ones so people could build their own kit.

To Peter Halle's comment about how States and Cities can have their own view of what signs work..... I got to say NA/US, States and Cities needs to stop thinking that they know more than anyone else. Adopting some international standards might be a good thing for the US!

One item that I have not heard mentioned here is an EpiPen. I don’t need one but I can’t say a member of my crew won’t…. this just points to making your kit into what you think you need.

Cheers,
Steve

I haven't put a kit together yet. I have a drawer in my bench in the shop for band-aids/first aid, etc.

At some point I'm thinking I'll put one together for days when I have to install something. When that day comes, I'll be scratch building with a red systainer, red latches. Spray paint white crosses on the sides, front, and top.

'Grab me the red box' seems like a much easier thing to explain. And given that all my other sustainers but one are white, and the odd one is Bosch blue, I figure it'll stick out like it needs to.

Wife is an NP, we have all the necessary contents around the house. Just need the box.

After hearing in my last First Aid course how quickly anaphylaxisaniphalactic can come on in a previously unaffected person, I thought I'd definitely need an Epipen in the kit. But the reality is that they are still really really expensive here, must be refrigerated, and given the extremely high vehicle temps in summer, they wouldn't even last long enough to justify the expense (I know, I know, no price tag on human life, etc).

What about the auto defibs they have now? Those things are awesome. About three grand here, but someday I'd love to carry one of those when the price comes down.

Actually EpiPens should NOT be Refrigerated or exposed to extreme heat or light. They should be storied at room temp.

From the EpiPen websight -

"The EpiPen Auto-Injector is not reusable. Even though you might see some liquid inside your EpiPen Auto-Injector after use, it cannot be used again. You should take your EpiPen Auto-Injector everywhere you go, but it should be kept at room temperature (25°C, 77°F) until the marked expiration date, when it should be replaced. The effectiveness of this drug may decrease after the expiration date; therefore, care should be taken to promptly refill the prescription before the expiration date. Your EpiPen Auto-Injector should not be refrigerated or exposed to extreme heat or light."

Thank you for the correction. My bad.

Regardless, 25C is the better part of half the inside temp of my van in summer. I doubt it would last long, but I suppose it might be better than having nothing.

Get the cheap one and if needed, buy extra supplies at the pharmacy.

Yeah but it's from Germany and if it's like holland it will be good stuff inside better than  UK I recon!

Uk bandages are crap!   I know cus we did have 2new first aid kits when we moved to England from holland like 8 years ago of course now we don't have them any more.  Any way we got couple uk first aid kits and the stuff from holland was way a head of the uk and I recon still be a head now.

When I was young 8 years ago lol. Me and my mates dared each other to spray deodorant on our hands as long as you can!   We'll me being solid was able to with stand the pain for so long that the pain actually stopped which was strange but I carried on till the spray can ran out!

Well it was weird my skin was really hard where I kept spraying the deodorant can.    Well after 1minute it was soft again and that was it but 15mins later I was in alot of pain so much so I couldn't cope!   I went to the nurse and she said I had given myself a 3rd degree burn.    Any way it developed into a massive blister!

The nurse stuck some cream on it and bandaged it up!   Well I had to change my bandage all the time and it kept sticking to my hand!   Well one day I changed my bandage at home using the Dutch first aid kit and all the patches had a metal mesh on one side!  Well I used that and when I went back to school and the nurse took the bandage of it did not stick to my hand at all and the nurse said where did you get this from never seen a bandage patch like this before I told her it's from holland.

Lol, you're quick, I deleted my comment because I realised the ebay auction on the cheap one you linked to was old and finished long ago. So you can only buy the expensive one. Seems like a normal Festool price though.

As for bandages quality, I don't know how that's in the UK, but I guess you can get good ones and bad ones like everywhere else. We got our fair share of crap over here in Holland too. Never seen those metal covered ones you talk about though. Maybe some rabbit fence got mixed up in the kit?

But I would just get a normal sys mini (€16), put some red cross stickers on it and fill it with a kit I bought at the pharmacy for around 25 euro.

Oh yeah baby speedy me!   I gathered you did it cus of that as I noticed it was old!

I was actually just to slow but I did see your comment but could not quote in time as it said it was deleted so I made up my own quote heehee  [tongue]

I was thinking of buying a coloured t-loc from warren and stick some stickers on it.

Wow!  Where to begin?  Can't we just make it easy and change the name of this thread to JMB's dumbest stuff and why no first aid kit sold on Earth comes with common sense.

Holy moly batman!  Who let him out of the house?
