Hi, we used our conturo edgbander for some simple prep edgebanding tape for mdf prior to spraying. We have been commissioned to do additional works for the same customer and noticed the edgebanding on the original project has started to lift. The surface was freshly clean cut, no dust etc. This is going to be one very expensive repair so much so we have not used the machine since. Has anyone has such problems.

Could be the edge banding rather than the conturo, contact the manufacturer

I don't own the machine nor have I used it. I did attend a demo-day once where amongst other tools, the Conturo was being demo'd.

It was noted by myself and a few other people attending that the banding didn't seem to be fully pressed against the particleboard, nor the glue fully melted and that using a normal clothes iron with some pressure applied could probably get a tighter joint. Could you not try repairing with a clothes iron and some cloth and see if you can re-bond the banding?

We always follow along with a little wood block to ensure a good bond. To try to reheat and stick it back wont be easy as the units have been finished in a sprayed lacquer finish and any heat will damage the finish. Think im up s--t creek without a paddle.

There's a difference between the melting point and the point at which some heat lessens the strength and makes the adhesive more pliable. Add into the fact that the radiators will come on and go off very often the regular heat and likely expansion/contraction could lead to this, even if the full melting point of the adhesive is never reached.

With particle board you have to increase the amount of adhesive the Conturo applies.

I've never had an issues with the edge banding not staying on.

Try fixing the loose area by warming a knife blade, insert it between the substrate and banding, warm glue, remove knife, press edge banding in place.

Hot melt glues may still move at lower temperatures and if the radiator is very hot then that could be an issue. Years ago I put a shelf above a radiator and the (hot iron applied) edge banding slowly began to separate from the chipboard.

I'm confused about edging MDF and then spraying here? Are you putting a timber edge on MDF, then spraying with a clear finish or something?

In Sydney the concept of boxing a radiator is a bit foreign anyway .. I'm sure someone's done it, but I've never seen it.

Just tell them to move somewhere warmer [wink] [big grin]

We use something called "paintable edging tape" for MDF a lot here to remove the requirement to prepare cut MDF edges prior to painting. It's a great time saver and provides for a very good finish.

I suppose my hatred of MDF has left me ignorant of this sort of stuff. I'm often amazed at how much innovation there is where I don't expect it and how little there is where I do!

With this type of application you can use compressed (possible vacuum with brush attachment) air gun to help remove any fine dust from the edge of the MDF - it is the very fine loose particles within the board that may prevent complete adhesion.

Hi Peter, I think you are bang on. Its a large unit, floor to ceiling and 12ft long and the only place the edgbanding has lifted if where the radiator is. It is the heat from the rad for sure which has caused the problem.
