Festool CTL 36 E making a ‘screaming/whining noise’

Just having a little issue with my vac, noticed it started to get quite loud when extracting. Cleaned out the filter today which had a lot of dust in it and blew the turbine out, put it all back together and still making the noise. Would it be an issue with the turbine in there? Can’t think what else would cause this issue, doesn’t appear to be overheating and everything runs smoothly. Makes the same noise with and without the hose on so I can’t imagine it being blocked up. Any suggestions?

Is it possible some of the dampening/sealing material has come loose and is flapping in the suction path?

I’ve had the machine apart and everything appears to be where it needs to be. It makes the same noise when it’s separated from the collection box. I was think could it be the brushes but was contemplating as I thought that would be more of a power related issue. Do you think these need replacing?

Your brushes are still good. A pin will be sticking through the middle of them and preventing the motor from running when they need to be replaced.

Is it just as easy to replace the whole motor instead of the bearing or would that be the case anyway?

Have you ever run the vac without the pleated filters? That is the only way you can get rubbish in the impeller but if that is a possibility give it another check.

You might also find a way to spin the motor and listen for the wine. Maybe direct a compressed air stream on the impeller to get it up to speed.

If you do decide to replace the motor rest assured all the essential moving parts (armature and brushes, impeller, bearings) are included in the one “part”.

It’s always had the filter in it when being used. I believe it’s had quite a few hundred hours of use and over time it’s gradually declined.

Ive had the motor out and blasted the air gun in there to get it spinning and the whine obviously isn’t as loud. Replaced the power lead as it had kinked up quite a bit and made it ran intermittently. The sounder now works every time I turn it on without fail but now it’s not even kicking the extractor side of things on, put a multimeter on the spade connection and it’s getting power so this is making me believe that the motor has failed completely.

If the motor has failed would this cause the issue of no extraction?

Sorry for the questions but I’m a bit of a noob to this machine

Absolutely no extraction if the motor has failed. Extraction only happens when the turbine is spinning fast and the turbine is mounted on the same shaft as the armature. If the bearings are good the only sound a spinning turbine will make is the sound of wind. It can get loud when inside the vac because of the air path constrictions but it won’t scream unless the bearings are bad.

I admire your willingness to get inside and check things out, especially as a “noob”.
