Festool CXS Wobble

hi all,

I finally ordered a CXS. Love at first sight. However, the love disappeared after first use. It seems my Centrotec bit holder, or the drill itself has a wobble. It's my first Festool drill, so I filmed the issue, to make sure I am not imagining things.

Is this normal behaviour or should I send the CXS back?

I have no noticeable runout in my CSX using the Jacobs chuck. I do see about the same amount of runout as seen in your video using the Centrotec chuck.

For putting in screws... no. If you have drill bits, it may be a different story.

Cheers. Bryan.

For the moment I do not own any Centrotec drill bits, but I assume they will wobble as well? If I can not properly drill, then the CXS is not working like he should?

You can drill just fine.  That amount of wobble is fine for this device (in my opinion). If you have concerns, take it back or talk to Festool.

You would be drilling things by hand, so preciseness is most likely out the window. If it was a drill press, that amount of wobble might be unacceptable. I have used my CXS for thousands of tasks in the 4 years and haven't had wobble affect me. Never really looked for it to be honest.

I think that the Centrotec drill bits are very stable in rotation and does not wobble about much, if any. On my unit they wobble less than the bit holder, why I am not sure. I find the CXS a little low in RPM but apart from that a very nice little drill. :)

Hi Bryan, so you do have the same amount of wobble?

I haven't checked. I can check later tomorrow if you like, but my point was that the wobble probably won't impact things at that level. If it is bothersome, then take action as I suggested above.

I have a lot of Festools and the CXS is probably one of my most used items.  If not daily, at least 3 times a week!  I have even used it as a hammer when one wasn't in reach. If it broke tomorrow morning, I would have a new one by noon.

Cheers. Bryan.

It's hard to tell form a video , but looks to me like the bit holder is bent - rather than there being excessive runout in the nipple that holds the chucks.

Hi,

checking for run-out with a bit-holder or with a bit in the fast fix connector is not exactly the best idea. Bit-holder, bits and stuff like that are not made to the same standard that high-quality, cylindrical drill bits are or let a lone test-pins.

So if you want to get a proper idea of how much run-out your CXS has, put on the jacobs chuck with a high-quality and straight drill bit or test-pin.

Then again - we're talking about a hand held cordless drill/driver - so as long as the hand you're holding the CXS with doesn't get forced to move along when driving a (straight) screw in or out or using a (straight) drill bit - all is perfectly well.

I'm mentioning this because you won't believe how many crap screws, bits, bit-holders and drill bits exist, even high-quality ones are not always perfectly straight - so you need to sort that out first.

If after that you still think run-out is unacceptable - have it checked by your dealer or Festool.

But again - your CXS looks perfectly fine to me. Put it through some use and decide after that ;)

Kind regards,
Oliver

Unless I need to operate the CSX in very tight spaces, I always use the Jacobs chuck. I do have a bunch of Festool Centrotecdrill bits. I find them to be excellent both with the Jacobs chuck and the Centrotec holder. I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with your CSX, but checking runout with the Jacobs chuck and a test pin wouldn't hurt.

My CXS has the same amount of wobble as the Op's, this is noticeable with both centrotec  and Jacobs chucks, I checked out a friends cxs and that was the same, this hasn't effected the day to day use of the drill and is still one of my favourites but I was initially surprised as my PDC has no notable wobble

Thx for the answers guys. I tried different bitholders with the same result. Using the Jacobs Chuck seems to improve the situation. I will do some more testing today.

Just did a test with the Jacobs Chuck. I am no expert in drills but I am afraid the CXS has a defect. The thing is wobbly as hell. Made another video. What do you guys think?

I do not see a problem. I have never understood people that worry about runout on a hand held drill.

The purpose of the Centrotec is to run concentric and I don't think that wobble is too concentric. IMHO.

Sorry but I dont understand that phrase. Could you elaborate?

The last test was done with the Jacobs Chuck.

Looks like you need to re-seat the drill bit in the chuck.  Sometimes that reduces wobble.
