Festool Domino DF500 slowed down

Good morning all,

I need your help. Some days ago I was working with my beloved Domino, making some 6mm mortices, and it suddenty slowed down a lot. Both rotational speed and left to right movement of the bit are quite slow and there is a lack of power too. It has some smell to it and I'll say that a little smoke was freed also. Not much though.

Its warranty period has long gone, so I dared to open it and take a look. All I could see is a little burnt on stator's yellow plastic. Nothing in the rotor, nor the electronics (well, the switch module with a capacitor and a toroid).

So I ordered a new Stator. As soon as it arrived I changed it but... no improvement at all.

My guess is that only the rotor or the "electronics" could go wrong, so I'm planning to buy one, the other or both.

So, what do you think could be the originator of the problem? The rotor or the switch module? May the capacitor be guilty?

And for the rotor, I didn't have problems detaching it from the housing, but I've taken a look at the Ekat and it seems that pinnion is sold separately, and I think that it is attached to the rotor by a press in two points. Needless to say, I don't have a press like that. Am I right? Can it be attached without problems? Do I sent it for service and asume the cost?

Thanks in advance. Kind regards.

Thank you Birdhunter, thats an option that would work for sure. I was trying to keep repair costs as low as possible, maybe I'm a little scared of the bill  :)

Have you checked for damage to the contacts in the plug? Dirty or damaged contacts can lead to resistance reducing speed at the motor and generating heat...

It looks like you replaced the stator so I infer the brushes have been checked/replaced.

Could you measure voltage before and after the switch?

Hi Woodwise,

I'll check for bad contacts in the plug, just in case. I desconected the fast-ons on it and they where nice and tight but I haven't checked the contacts.

Brushes are fine. More than 80% left.

I'll measure voltage before and after switch.

Thank you very much.

I had that with my 700 XL, turned out to be a failure in the winding... which was replaced on a trip through festool service.
