Hello all.

first post here. looking forward to gaining knowledge from other festool users.

My question relates to the domino. I have owned my domino 500 for a while now and absolutely love it. I recently built a credenza using the domino. For the credenza I used walnut plywood and all the joints were butt joints with I believe four domino tenons in each joint. The domino was set on the tight setting. All went well as there are no movement issues with the plywood.

I have seen photos of people using this method for solid case construction whether it be butt joints, mitres, etc.
can you use the domino for solid case construction and it allow wood movement? if so what spacing and how to glue? to me it doesn't seem like it is possible but i could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time!

thanks for any input in advance.

It's no different than using dovetails or dowels. As long the carcass members are the same species, moisture content and cut (don't mix flat sawn with quarter sawn) they will expand and contract at the same rate.

Hm now that you said that it seems obvious. I've made domino drawers and dovetailed drawers which are the same concept. Thank you for your help sir.

Of course you must butt the boards so the grain runs in the same direction.  No cross grain butt joints.  Cannot do |-- type matching.  Must all be |||| or -----.  You are sort of wondering if the dominoes buried inside the wood will contract or expand at a different rate than the boards they are inside.  Doubt the small domino rate of contraction or expansion will matter for the whole board.  I have seen other articles about people custom making their own dominoes out of the same wood they are joining.  So if you have lots of free time and are nutty, you could make a piece out of all walnut, including the dominoes.  Just align the grain correctly.
