I used Festool heavy duty oil from the Surfix set to coat a dining table -- i put two coats on. would you guys consider this enough protection for a table that gets heavily used by kids, water spilled, etc ? Or would I be wise to put something else over the oil, like polyurethane? i don't mine refinishing it every year or so.

"Heavily used"? An oil finish may not offer the type of protection you are looking for. Yes it protects the wood, but it protects it from drying out- you could say it protects it from itself in a way- not so much from dents, pens, stains etc. If the oil finish is an oil/ varnish blend that will help you somewhat and I think the Festool product is just that.

I would wax it as well, but a poly will offer more protection at the cost of not looking as good.

Maybe you could start by oiling it and see how you get on. You can always refinish it later on.

Hi,
I've had great luck with Waterlox as a finish for dining tables, including the one I have in my home.  It gets used every day and it has held up very well even after 5 years of daily use.
