Festool KF 5 Putty Router

It is meant to remove the putty that is used to keep windows in their place. Instead of the tedious task of removing it by hand with a knife or chisel you can route it away.

Looks just like a normal 1010 but with a fancy cutter & a shield.  don't know why it cost so much more ?  [crying]

To be honest, I would never use a router to remove the putty! During my three year of training to become a woodworker we restored/replaced many windows. It's correct, the putty is a pain to remove, but there are also metal pieces that hold the glass in place till the putty is dry. Those metal triangles are as thin and sharp as razor blades! They are being attached with a type of staple gun.
I can not imagine putting a router to them and getting peppered ....

Apparently the KF 5 is prepared for that and makes it safe. From the Dutch Festool website: "Geen letsel als gevolg van glassplinters, spijkers en kitresten dankzij de splinterbescherming van metaal"

Which translates to: "No harm can be done by glass splinters, nails and putty residue because of the metal splinter guard."

But I don't know, that splinter guard looks mighty small.

Here's the manual in zip format for those who are interested: Link

certainly late to this conversation (just browsing the forums), but i was curious what kind of bit does this thing use to remove putty and if it is a special bit, couldnt you just use that bit on another router or is the shild that big a deal.

Isn't this just an OF1010 with a different shield? Sure does look like it.

I've used a small trim router (Ryobi's cordless unit) to remove the glazing from some windows... It didn't have any outboard support so I can't say it was a great idea, and if I posted pictures Shane would probably remove the thread.  ;-)

In retrospect, knowing more now, I could've attached a little foot and it would've gone splendidly.
