Festool of2200 fastfix spindle lock broke!!

Two questions:
1) how in the hell can that even happen?
2) is it easy enough to repair or should I send it in?  I am fairly mechanically adept, but don’t want to spend hours rebuilding a router. 
As the story goes: inserted a router bit, fast fix works fine, went to remove the bit after use and fast fix is broken.  So confused...

Hi,

1) It is not a normal spindle lock, but some kind of ratcheting mechanism.

2) There might be some dust in the ratcheting mechanism, see this topic:http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tool-problems/ratcheting-collet-not-working-on-of2200/

  Check to make sure trigger isn’t accidentally locked on.  1400 has safety am not sure about 2200.

Yes Peter is correct, it has that safety feature on the 2200 also.

BOOM!  You guys are great.  Pulled off the black cap and behold: a bunch of black, burnt dust clogged up around the lock.  You would have thought I was pouring espresso through the router with the color and consistency of the dust.  Well, back up and running.  Thanks again!
