Festool on DIY Network show

Just saw an episode of Rescue Renovation where the host used a TS55 to make a built-in. No efforts to hide the manufacturer of the tool were made, like they sometimes do- the Festool logo was blatantly displayed from numerous angles.  Great exposure that will hopefully lead to some sales.

Going back to the days when Bob Vila hosted TOH I have occasionally watched episodes of it and ATOH.

The funny thing is that I had owned a TS55, rails and a CT22 for over a month before I realized I had recorded an episode of TOH during which a flooring contractor had actually used a TS55 and a long rail. After I re-watched that episode on my tape, I started to notice Festool appearances.

For the past couple of years when I see an episode of TOH or ATOH with an especially interesting Festool appearance, I give the DVD I recorded to my local dealer.

Early this year it was especially interesting because our mutual friend, Larry Bucklan, designed and installed the cabinets for the TOH Silverlake, California project. Because TOH and ATOH are supported by contributions from Stanley Works, the Festool brand is never mentioned and to the extent possible the logos are not shown. But the same is equally true of tools made by Stanley.

Still when a tool photographs nearly black with bright green trim, we all know the brand without seeing a logo.

Tommy Silva of This Old House and Ask This Old House makes no bones about which his favorite tools are... He always uses Festool drills, I have seen him and Norm Abrams make cabinets with the TS55 and the OF1400 on site.  Kapex was on there when he installed some crown molding, and I saw the MFT3 when he was re-doing the house on the Charles River.  In fact, the only reason I became interested in Festool was because of Tommy.  Way I figured it, if its good enough for him, it is definitely good enough for me.

Kayleen Mccabe from Rescue Renovation,  is one on my customers. I met her in the store in the Festool area. I asked if she needed help and she said she loved Festool and wished she could have one of everything on her set. That was when I realized I knew her from somewhere.

She has to be one of the most knowledgeable customers, and just down to earth nice. She owns a TS55 herself and uses it to make furniture when not shooting new episodes.

As an aside, how did DIY shows stray so far from the quality of TOH?

I'm just guessing, but I think it was when they went from catering to the do-er to the do-ers' incentives. You can read that however you want...

I used to be the only one in our house that had anything to do with tools and I would spend most of my (free) life related to them. Because of TOH and the spinoffs, which include all sorts of PBS and other shows, everyone seems to think they are tool people. Lately, if I only watch TV to get a perspective on construction and finish carpentry, it would be easy to assume that paste-on leftover fabric scraps were "The New" classic paneling.

Thank you, Kreg, for disabusing those people, with whom you deal, of such nonsense.

Gluing stuff that should become a car seat or my grandmother's sofa cushion to a wall is absurd.

'Sorry if this offends any "artists"...

One of my better (and luckier!) Festool moments...way back in 2004...introducing Tom and later his brother Dickie and the gang to Festool.

Mr. Nagrod - it was Saulius Tolekis there with me and he took the bottom picture.

As an aside, with  all the talk of the Carvex and Trions lately, I do so clearly remember Tom's initial comments after trying out Festool's PS 2E (predecessor to the Trion) jigsaw -"this saw's got b...s".

Bob, you referring to "the bank heist"?  [big grin]
Sorry, but that link isn't working for me.  It said something about signing in for access.

Tom, I'm not that artistic, so I found it easier to just glue my grandmother to the wall and sit on her sofa.

Yep, sorry about that link - fixed.

Kayleen, in addition to giving a fine person vibe, is incredibly hot.  And now I hear that she has the good taste and sense to own and check out Festools.  Booyah!

About the diy network, I started watching it in 2006 before it went brain dead.  They had a show in the afternoon related to tools, they had woodworks, they had Amy (not Matthews) designing and building cool things for her friends, This Old House, and a bunch of good programming.  Then they started repeating the same three seasons of TOH (I had the DC one memorized), and just went full tilt for the exciting, dumbed down shows.  Now they show the same thing over and over, mostly decoration and design, repeats, repeats, repeats... argh!

The only thing I can say is that I wish I could meet with Ahmed or Josh or the bathroom guy at Lowes in Pompano Beach, FL so they could pimp out my house.

Kayleen is on now... sigh.  To be 20 years younger.  But then I'd be 23 years away from retiring, not three.  Hmmm...
