I have noticed of late that there are a significant number of these sanders being placed for sale, both here on FOG as well as on eBay. Has me wondering if it is due to dissatisfaction with the sander or an opportunity to turn a profit on the introductory sale price.

I think on eBay because it could be bought for so cheap and the fifty dollar refund so $$$$ on the sellers end. I see them online all the time but they don't seem to sell here, the ones I've seen posted here seem to come from new members for the most part. They probably think it'll be an easy sale. Of which, is there or has there been a minimum post count to list on the classified listings?

I like mine. I have seen them for well over the $99 price some complete but many without the voucher or some without the Systainer. Pretty damn shady if you ask me.

Kind of gives one an idea of the cost and profit when they come in sustain and a $50 coupon for $99. (Noting that the R&D may been for free via a different existing festool)
The R&D needs a lot of sales to spread the cost, or the tools become expensive.

And for generation advertisement they seem like a wildly good success.

People are doing the buying cheap and then reaping the profits based on the Festool name and warranty.

Doubt that we will ever see this type of Festool promotion again.

They turned on a LOT of people to their products and sucked in a lot more koolaid sippers with that promotion. MANY of use bought a whole lot more after just getting the taste of that $99 sander. I think they might some day run a similar promotion, when they need a boost in customers or sales.

Next time FT needs to do promotions with lesser discount to not overwhelm production capacity and make resale less lucrative. For example, 20% off instead of 75% off, which was effectively the case with PRO5.

Unfortunately, it was a marketing strategy that just didn't pan out. I'd rather liken this as a short brief as to how NOT to rollout a new product. The basic idea had merit, the implementation was horrendous.

Many many years ago Festool was trying to get a hold here in the US and they had a ETS 150 promo for $59 for businesses that were a target customer type.  I was lucky to get in on that promo.  I would not have paid the regular price at that time, it was hard to justify spending the regular asking price for a brand I have never heard of before then. I now have a lot of Festool tools, not as many as many of you but a lot. So I can see how this works.  If they can get someone who was going to buy a $70 sander from a big box store and try it, they might get them hooked on it and want to try more. Sure, I am pretty convinced they have lost money on every single unit sold, however, that isn't the end. So the next time that person walks into a dealer, who knows maybe they pay a little bit more closely to what is on display and is willing to buy a higher price tool.  Now for those that took advantage of the deal and are reselling, I have no issues with it.  They plunked down the money and are sitting on inventory. It is a free market, if someone wants to pay more than the original price that is their choice.  Eventually, the supply will be gone or near gone and prices will go up more.  Since Festool doesn't seem to have an issue with price increases each year the cost to get into a similar sander is much higher than what people are selling for today. I got one of these, and I am in the process of selling my older 125 EQ. The sale price is more than what I paid for the Pro, eventually someone will buy it or they won't for the price I am asking. the market will decide.

I knew this, as most probably did, in advance. The discount was too good and quite a few people I know bought multiples for the purpose of reselling them. There target market was not existing Festool owners, but they ended up with what could be a 99% buy-in by existing owners. I doubt this was an in-house idea. It sounds more like something an outside consultant came up with because they don't understand that Festool is not competing with any other American tool company. If you are in the market for a sander and you can buy the Festool for $99 or the PC or DeWalt model for $75 are you really going to spend an extra $25 to be able to save $50 off a tool that costs more than double the equivalent PC or Dewalt model.

I have had many tell me my tracksaw is interesting and then ask how much. My answer is always "it costs a ridiculous amount of money, but it does things that other saws cannot". I don't think most people (in or out of the trade, but not familiar with Festool, or in this case Mafell) would be able to even come close. I figure it is better to leave the cost as an unknown, than to appear to be bragging.

It was 10+ years ago when Festool ran a promotion offering a $25 rebate on all tools purchased within a certain time frame. It was a good way to reward loyal customers, now we just get stuck with annual price increases that cannot be explained away given the exchange rate. It is ludicrous that a tool can be purchased and shipped to the US for less than you can buy it in the store.

Do we have any numbers to back this up?

The big box customer is not going to stumble across the discounted Festool sander nor are they going to buy it unless it is in the big box store. The primary aim of this promotion was probably more geared towards tradesmen, but that is even a stretch given the tool brands I see nearly everyday. A flooring installer I know uses Festool sanders and saws work, but his company is the only one I know of.

Do we have any numbers to disprove it? Im just speaking from the activity Ive seen around the net since the promotion started and from my own personal experience. Only Festool themselves could truly answer this question, and Im sure theyll never give the information out.

I think the promotion was intended to do all that, but.............

Given that the sanders were only available for three days or less - how many "new" customers do you think happened to in the right place at the right time and pulled the trigger when they found out ?

I'm guessing few .  Shane's outfit tickled their existing customers Festool and non-Festool alike ; so it's possible that some guys that didn't yet own FT jumped at the offer.  But it probably wasn't many gauging by the comments round  here by people that didn't order one but realized right away what a deal it was.

I can speak from my own experiences a budding hobbyist. I already owned a few fes-tools but no sanders or dust collectors and had no intention to buy any given I already had a Bosch sander. When the pro5 deal came along I jumped for it. At first I didn't see the benefit but read about the dust collection advantage quite a bit. So After the pro5 I got a Ct mini and was blown away by the combo, and am now looking at which other sander(s) to get.

Pick up the ETS EC 125/3 and sell the Pro 5 :)

Was it?
It seems a few jumped about and needed to be sent back. And then there was the wait.

It is not an ETS/EC !  If it was then it would have been a deal.

You basically ended up paying for a systainer and a plug it cord and got a free sander and voucher towards the next tool purchase, sounds like a fantastic deal to me!

Well I have to say I bought the Pro 5 and this is my first festool product. I think the sander is awesome but I would like to upgrade to the ETS EC 125. I've had no luck selling it on Craigslist so I'll probably end up keeping it. At this time I'm probably going to be buying the TS 55, MFT/3, Domino 500, and the CT 36. Doing some soffit, facia, siding, furniture work... So them offering this deal apparently worked on me...

Try e-bay. Pro5s are sold there often (look in advanced search, sold items) for up to $250.
