Festool Rebating head FK D 50x30

Hi there,

New guy to FOG!

Was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Festool Rebating head FK D 50x30, for the cms.

How well does it perform and can cutters be made for the block itself?
Any thoughts or info would be brilliant!

Welcome along.

That's a pretty unusual item - quite rare I think. I've looked at it in the past & thought about getting one for my (non-CMS) router table, but two things have always put me off; a) the cost, and b) the fact you can't get any other cutters for it. I guess you could have shaped cutters made for it, but the cost would be astronomical, plus it wouldn't meet safety regs as it doesn't have chip limiters.

It certainly appeals to me as a mini-spindle moulder, and would cut rebates far easier & cleaner than just a standard straight router bit.

I don't recall anyone on here having mentioned owning one, but there may be one or two European users who have it (it's never been available in North America).

Thanks for that! Good point about the limiters, as well as cost! Cutters wouldn't be too badly priced as I get them made up fairly regularly. I've seen a CMT version which comes in slightly cheaper. I'll do a little more homework and see what I can find. I'll keep you guys posted!

Do CMT do a version of this? I've not seen that. I'd love a version of this with different profiles, sort of a step between a router table and a full-size spindle moulder.

I have the cutter - I have to say that it works brilliantly using the OF2200 in the CMS.  Very smooth operation definitely worth it if you have this set-up.

I can't speak for other cutters, I have just used the standard Festool supplied ones.

Don't know about that - the spindle isn't a standard 1/2" shaft to fit in a normal collet - it replaces the collet (see pic in link in above post). So I doubt it would fit in any router other than a Festool.

Hi wood-colleagues,

Yesterday I got the festool rebating head as a present (yes indeed). I now have the same question as the starter of this thread:
Has anyone experience with blades with a profile instead of straight cutters? I know Festool only sells standard blades.

If it fits the Festool OF2200 it should fit the ELU MOF177, Dewalt 625, Trend, Freud, Fein and Matabo 1612 as they all use the same collet.

I made form a piece of aluminium a holder for ball bearings. With the 3 bearings I am able to make rebates  of 5, 10 and 15mm (straight OR around curves).

The head has a 12mm boring and fits on a matching arbor. Profiled knives sounds exciting but I doubt that without the proper support of the head, these knives will last long.

SAFETY point: 50mm diameter router bits quickly exceeds their maximal RPM, slow down your router (rotational speed and feed)! I will certainly do this when I am using it with this modification  [big grin]
