Interesting thread i think the op made the wrong decision sending the machine. For service
At 8 years old it should just been binned.
What could be a good idea is a thead about machine repair and associated costs too help owners make an informed decision. Before wasting time and money sending a machine for repair.
Also if festool could supply an average repair cost before the tool was sent for repair that would also help everyone.

A number of power tool manufacturers offer fixed cost tool repairs, with the maximum cost of repairs fixed at a particular rate for individual tool models.

Milwaukee Tool, for instance, has their "Lightning Max Repair" service. Milwaukee actually has a list of tool models with the LMR price. LMR repairs include:

-Repairs at a certified Milwaukee® repair facility

- A full teardown inspection and cleaning

- Replacement of worn & damaged parts

- Complete re-lubrication

- Full performance & safety tests assuring the mechanical & electrical safety of your tool

I have an older Milwaukee branded sheet metal shear, model 6810.  I'm not sure when Milwaukee discontinued this model, but I think some parts lists I've seen were dated no later than 1982, and the 6815 model shear that replaced the 6810 shear was available from at least 1986 judging from parts lists. Milwaukee still has a LMR repair price listed for the 6810. The current repair snd service LMR cost is listed at $170. The current "equivalent" Milwaukee shear model is the 6815, which has a list price of $600, and a street price somewhere between $350 and $470. The 6810 shear was one of the few Milwaukee items from that time period that was not made in the USA. The shear was made in Germany, likely by Trumpf. The current cost for an equivalent model by Trumpf is around $1,200. I can still get authorized servicing for the 30+ year old shear.

I don't understand why an 8 year old tool, from a high end brand, that usually costs a significant premium over many other professional brands, should be considered a throw away, or have to be, once the warranty runs out.
