Festool thermal images

The Seek was very interesting because they had android and iPhone version and it was $150 cheaper than the flir one.  But now that it's only $50 cheaper, the iPhone version isn't shipping due to Apple licensing issues, and the android has it's own issues, the flir1 came back up on top.  The seek's thermal resolution is higher, but the flir1's MSX(hybrid thermal and standard vision) makes up for it.  Then there's the fact that you need to order the android version based on which direction your usb plug is oriented, and there's been a possible manufacturer defect reported that shows a gradient across the screen when there shouldn't be.

I *briefly* looked at the website, but I want one for the iPhone 6 plus. I didn't see an option to 'pre-order' one or even put in a request.

Has anyone seen anything that might indicate one coming out?

I would say that the dual camera helps a lot in terms of context for the images.  Depending on what you're using it for, I haven't found the limited resolution...well, that limiting.  I really don't see why FLIR went with coupling it so tightly with the iPhone 5/5s in the first place.  It's a bit too big to leave on the phone all the time so I just end up slipping it on and off (plus it's my wife's iphone, I use android, so that is a bit of a pain as well).  There was also a recent software (firmware?) change that allows it to be an external battery for the iphone, but again, you would have to leave it on.  It's turned out to be quite useful...would have been better at $100 off..but such is life.

I hope it doesn't HAVE to mount on the bottom of the phone like they show it. I have a 6 Plus and I don't need for it to be any larger. It would be fine (for me) if it was a bump on the back since that wouldn't interfere with my case or the way I wear it on my belt...

It's designed to be an attached when needed device. Keeping something attached like that by the tiny micro USB port is asking for it to be snapped off.

This is a great tool for contractors.  This photo illustrates how you can find under insulated sections such as an area in my home ceiling.

I have the same thing going on in my ceiling and it's not under-insulation but rather the bathroom ventilation duct is running out the joist bay in that location.

Completely useless, but one of the most fun things to do with the Flir is to spot the footprints on the floor from the pets.  it's really amazing how well they show up.

And not completely useless, but if you spill something, you can use the Flir to spot exactly where the liquid is.

I've got an enquiry into them asking if actual temperature values can be assigned to the various colors. We shall see.

Well that was quick, it took them all of 2 minutes to respond. [thumbs up]

Their response:
"Yes the color palettes can be locked so a certain color would always be the same temperature.

I hope this answers your question, I will go ahead and close your ticket but if you have any more questions or need more information, please feel free to reopen the ticket by responding to this email or logging into the support portal."

Second generation announced.

Quadruple the resolution plus Android support.  [thumbs up]

This finally dropped today. iOS can be ordered today, Android version is pre-order for delivery in a month.

I ordered one for my iPhone 6 + this morning. Can't wait to use it.

And use it I will!  We are putting our house on the market and are building a new one a few miles away. River view here we come!

I will review when I get it... Unless someone beats me to it!

Cheers. Bryan.

I'm also really interested in ordering one to use for finding air/temperature leaks in the building envelope. I'd also use it for early detection of "hot spots" on our Golden Retriever.

I think it's like a LS 130 sander, it may seem kind of gimmicky at first, but once you own it, you find all sorts of tasks it will handle.

It comes in next week. First uses I have planned for it:
- looking for areas lacking insulation in my current house.
- checking for leaks in hvac lines
- goofing around with a new gadget!

I am sure I will discover more items, but getting my house sealed and more efficient was the primary purpose. Part 2 was going to be used during the construction phase of the new house... I am sure I will find other uses by then.

Cheers. Bryan.

Checking for leaky HVAC connections is a great idea.  [thumbs up] I've alway made that type of HVAC leak detection by "feel" but the problem is that while it may feel that it is leaking in an area, the actual leak can be several feet away.

In checking a drywall air leak about 15 years ago, the actual source of the air incursion was 8 feet away from where I was looking. [eek]

About 10 years ago I signed up for a free energy audit sponsored by our local energy provider. They came out and attached a blower door to the front door, pulled a negative pressure and then walked around the house looking for leaks using a Fluke thermal imaging camera. I've wanted one ever since but the $4000-$5000 price always stopped me.

More feedback from FLIR:

My question:
So once the color palettes are locked, then the various temperature values would be displayed or are available. Say red = 125 degrees, orange = 90 degrees and so on.

FLIR answer:
You cannot assign a temp to a certain color, e.g. when you are looking at a surface you can lock the span. You have one spot meter that displays the temp.
however if you locked the span and it shows purple to be 50F and you move the camera ... purple will always be 50F.

I just realized my microUSB port is flipped from how it's configured on the GS6. So it'll be lots of thermal selfies...hmm...

I received my FlirOne today and am really impressed with the quality of the packing.

Inside it has the unit as well as a nice little rubberized case to put in in when not using it.

It also has all of the standard documents plus a nice little teather that attaches to the rubber case for quick pull access.

I have to finish some work but will test this bad boy out a little later with plenty of screen shots. So far the look, feel and build all scream quality.

Cheers. Bryan.
