Drainage holes in case the roof leaks.  You put a pan there to collect it.

i thought it was screwd on, seen that quite alot on larger skirting. doesnt look like a finishing gun lol hes at it

He has said he used screws he said 3 inch 10s     but I was just replying to Neth cus they are to big for second fix nails but not for screws of course.

I just thought he used nails as often nails are inconsistent  you often just bang them any where on the skirting but  screws you tend to fix them in specific places and equally  so it made me think they where nails.    Well when I screw which is very rare but if the wall is bowed badly I will screw and I always keep them inline square down jst looks tidy counter sunk.    Put  I prefer second fix 63mm nails dovetail with Stick like Sh*T or Fix all to stick it back and if the walls are really badly so no plaster near the bottom I will use foam  otherwise it will be 1 tube of fix all per skirting which would be very expensive.

I agree they must be nails not screws... as you say you always seem to put screws inline down the skirting... I try to avoid sticks like s""t as its a nightmare to get off your hands  [big grin]

haha dudes all this arguing about screw holes [tongue]

it is 7" skirting, i usually drill the holes in a line but the top hole felt soft so i moved the bottom hole over a bit into solid brick.

is the walls are stud/dabbed or lightweight block i also go the gripfill and 16ga pin route but for brick it needs drilling, i can chip the filler out and photo the screw head if you want  [blink]

LoL. Haahaa yeah it is funny!

Tou use grip fill?  Have you tried  sticks like sh*t. Or fix all?   It's alot better and easier to use and holds 10xbetter than gripfil.   Grip fill forms a skin to quickly and is to thick so it can keep your skirting away from the wall if you put to much on.

You don't have to screw if it's brick you can still do the same just use smaller nails with your second fix gun. The nails are only der to just hold the skirting while the glue goes off so if its just holding it's fine and you can nail some 2x1  to the floor concrete or wood to prop the skirting against the wall while the glue goes off I use that method if the client wants no fixings showing AT ALL.     I use to use grip fill for fixing but then couple times needed to remove the skirting for the plumber and it just popped off very easily..    With fix all or sticks like sh*t or Foam it was a lot harder it even pulled the plaster of with skirting.   Pink grip just stuck to the skirting but not the plaster.

yeah i find gripfil ok, there is some makes that instantly skin over and are pants like everbuild liquid nails [mad]

from reading one of your posts yonks ago about using foam to stick skirting ive used foam a few times with great results [big grin]

last time i looked at sticks like (probs when it first came out) was like £7 a tube which put me off.

in the past ive had 7" skirting cup from just pinning and no nails so ive got into the habbit of screwing,

Yeah I see what your saying!       Its normally the crap double sided mould stuff which cups I try and avoid using that if I can I got to timber merchants who sell the skirting with single mould just on one side far better better for your external mitres aswell.

Yeah Foam holds really really well and is a great gap filler and doesnt keep your skirting away!  Downside I have found if you pushed the skirting against the wall and then you let the skirting come away on one ends while your fixing the other end the foam doesnt work aswell as it seems to disapear once its been squashed.   So I try and keep it away couple inches and work my way along pushing it against the wall making sure it stays their untill I have pinned it  it holds really well then.

YEah the Sticks Like is expensive I think I pay £5-6   for it but like I said only use it for new walls as you dont need to apply it thick just make sure you have some at the top and bottom of the skirting.   If the walls are bad and have lots of plaster missing then Foam is way way cheaper I think its like £5-6 a tin for that as well but it goes miles dont it!

i will try some sticks all when i get chance, i suppose its like gripfil is dewalt and sticks like is festool haha [big grin]

your foam is expensive i pay £4.30 singular or £3.66 if i get a box of 12. from toolstation

fix all is 3,80 if bought by box
soudaflex is 4.70
sikaflex is 6.95
stick like is £6

theses can all be had for £3 or less if you shop around and buy in bulk a little more.

we get sikaflex for £2.70+vat

ceresit ft101 sealant is about £7 but my local supplier has some out of date stuff which works fine for 89p a tube

YEah I cant remember what it is called ill find out but the Foam I use it goes further than regular foam and it is less airy than regular foam thats why it costs more I think its better!  Also I only buy 1 or 2 cans at a time so thats why it costs more also!  I do need to bulk buy but I dont use alot of my own foam  its normally supplied for me so if I bought a load it properly go out of date.  (ill find out what I actually pay for the Foam I use next time cus to be honest I kinda just take it pay for it and go not taking much noticed but im pretty sure its like £5-6.

Fix all is cheaper than Sticks like  like Dean said!      I use to get Sticks Like for free as my mate use to get it  free but he has gone to OZ now so I need to buy the stuff now!  and cus of Cost I have changed to Fix All as it seems just as good as Sticks Like!

You hit the Nail on the head der lol  Gripfill is Dewalt    and Sticks all is Festool perfect comparison!!

You you should try Sticks All you will love it!  Brilliant stuff!

fix all and sticks like are both ms polymers i think which are very good adhesives

Can you guys tell me what you mean by first fix, second fix, etc? I'm British born but have spent most of my life in the colonies. And don't go bustin my balls. Thanks fellas.

1st fix is stuff like roofs/floor joists/flooring/studwork/door frames etc

then 2nd fix is asfter the plaster has been in like skirting/trim work/ doors/ loft hatches etc

Just to simplify Speed's answer, 1st fix refers to rough framing carpentry and 2nd fix refers to finish (trim) carpentry and 3rd fix is probably the guy who comes back to fix all the mistakes of 1st and 2nd.

AND 4th fix is the person who fixes 3rd fixs work when he tried to fix 1st and 2nd fix jobs!
