Files & filing

I am using all the ones I bought or I would be glad to give you what I have left. I think I bought a dozen in various sizes and paid less than $12 for the bunch.

The old hardware store is not what it used to be. No more 'treasures' to be discovered when you visit. I am sure none of that stuff was paying it's own way with regard to the floor space it took up but it was like a time machine sometimes going in there and finding something out of production for 20 years or that odd bearing or fastener. I miss the old Fazzios mostly for the metal scrap sheds but the industrial supply store is nice too. With higher prices to match. :-(

It looks like they are deemphasizing the precut 5/6' lengths of AL, no longer in their catalog but they did have stock, albeit at $4.65/#  [eek]

Makes sense given the additional labor required for small amounts of metal, but (2) 4' - 1/4" by 2" AL cost $28 yesterday. I just have to remember to bring a portaband with me if they discontinue shorts, I can buy 10-12' sections if necessary and whack them up to fit in the SUV.

Drops are still $0.50/# for steel, while the last time I bought short lengths it was around $2/#, up from $1/# pre-covid. 3 stops in surplus/metals/industrial (& no file handles anywhere) and the trip cost ~$200 including gas/tolls. I "needed" a couple file handles and 2' of 1/4" AL...

I'm lucky not to have a trailer or forklift any longer, the boss would be peeved with me if I brought some of their treasures home.

PS [member=3192]rvieceli[/member] Ron they sell plasma cut plugs in their scrap area, used one for a task lamp and thought of you. Quick & dirty.

Cool - is that 3/4 plate?

Ron

The one I used is 5/8" (& 8" diameter), so the smaller one must be 3/4"+. I grabbed these yesterday for a grand total of $5.58+ tax. The one in use was an earlier purchase.

They are cool enough with the pierce and draft angle that I thought you might use them without further modifications.

Wouldn't take much to fill that piercing with the MIG machine and grind it flush.
A coat of paint and no one would ever know... except you barber. :-)

It's a feature, not a bug.

I had a couple of pieces that had that on the drop piercing start on them powder coated. I thought the folks that did the powder coating were going to have a stroke.  [eek]
