Filling a knot hole and staining

I have a piece of quarter sawn white oak that has a knot hole about 1/2 inch across. I would like to fill it with something clear, like epoxy. I am also staining the wood a dark color. I've never done this before so I'm not sure of the order and what is an appropriate filler.

Thanks,
Anthony

Have you thought about filling it with either a plug of white oak or a piece of wood to make it look like a knot.
I've use hardwood tree branches like madrone to fill knot holes or to use as plugs to hide mounting screws. Just sand to adjust for size.
I've used epoxy to fill small hole in end grain cutting boards. The epoxy won't take the stain but should finish out dark in color.
Good luck.
