I'm building a fence to keep our big dogs out of the garden – they can't seem to get their heads around the "walk on the paths between beds rule." It will be pressure treated 4x4 posts set in concrete with cedar framed stock panels as the actual fence.

I really don't like the look of pressure treated material – both the color and the injection holes "hurt my eyes." So, I'm toying with the idea of filling the holes and painting the posts. There are only 10 of the so it doesn't seem like an impossible task. So my questions:

  • Is this a crazy idea? Not for the labor, but because it would cause the posts to rot or because you can't make paint stick on pressure treated posts or…
  • If I'm not crazy, what would you use as the filler? DAP has a product called "Platinum Patch" that they describe as "advanced exterior spackling paste" and Zinsser has "Ready Patch Spackling and Patching Compound" will they work? Or is there a more suitable product?
