My home is 30 years old and I have been using a Sherwin Williams water based toner deck stain on the rough cedar siding.  It has worked well for years, very easy and fast to apply but I really should be applying it every two to three years.  I live in eastern Washington state and we get snow & minus degree temps and 100+ degree days so the finish gets extreme exposure.
I'm wondering what some of you fellas are using that lasts a little longer and protects better?  I'm pretty impressed with the Penofin products since I've used them on my redwood deck the past year but don't know if there's a comparable product for siding.

In your enviorment, I don't think you'll get more than 3 years out of anything else.

Scott B. could weigh in on this, but Sikkens Cetol might work well for you if the two/three color choices are in your taste.[ Orange not Found in Nature, A Lighter Version of that Orange, and  A Brown.]  I'm kidding about the Cetol, but in all seriousness,  what color is your siding now with the SW product you're using. And, how much longer of a maint. time are you looking to get out of what ever you apply versus what you're getting now with the water based product?
Is there any plants like shrubs or flower beds near the siding that could be affected by product run-off over time? I'm only thinking that the water-based product hasn't given you any worries in that dept.  [unsure]

I've been using Sikkens SRD and love the look and finish.  I did tons of reading online and it came highly recommended.  It comes in about 8 different colors and I apply 2 coats, each of which take about a day to dry (probably a couple weeks to cure).
