Finishing plywood?

Hi all,

I'd appreciate a little help with some product advice. What finishes do people use to colour plywood in a way that doesn't fill the grain like a normal acrylic or alkyd paint does? A stain and clear coat would seem the obvious choice for traditional colours, but what if I wanted to paint/colour a project in a deep blue, or a modern grey colour while retaining the original texture and feel?

There are dyes for wood.  They work much like stains.  India ink is good for a rich black.

Here are examples of dyes on wood:

Sealcoat will not fill the grain very much, and it is near water-clear.  But shellac is not a very hard-wearing finish. It is easily recoated though.

depends i use a GF jell or a wipe on stain from mohawk

I have not used it on plywood (yet, but I have one coming up), but have on maple (a difficult to stain wood) with good results.  There are a number of videos, both on their site and on Youtube of application, including non-typical colors.

You can readily mix colors to get a custom color combination.
