Finishing/Refinishing Furniture Books?

I posted over on Sawmill and am now posting here.

Can any of recommend a good book regarding the finishing and refinishing furniture? I would like it to cover topics from stripping (beginning) to end (applying protective layers).

I have always like the "Complete Illustrated Guide To..." series from Taunton.  The books cover a ton of topics, and are comprehensive.  Good resource for getting ideas to go further in-depth to many areas.

      I really like Understanding Wood Finishing  By Bob Flexner.  Gives solid info on all types of stain , dye, fillers, finishes, oil, polishing, surface prep. stripping.  The text and info is what I would call common language science.  He tells what you need to know, how things interact or don't, etc with out getting overly technical. He also dispels many myths, and finishing practices so that you don't end up doing a bunch of extra useless work.

You may try some Sam Maloof stuff as well.  There are so many ways to finish....find a book you can identify with. Then experiment with it. The Biggest thing I can suggest about finishing / experimentation is to WRITE YOUR FORMULA's AND METHODS DOWN so you can replicate the process if it works.  Shop conditions, available application apparatus, and products available to you is something to consider as well.  For example, if you find a great book on "spraying", do you own an HVLP or Airless applicator?, if not, is that an expense you are ready to take on. 

I have always gravitated towards hand applications, for my shop conditions, this is the best method for me.
