Just a fun clip of how we balance production and quality in the shop...

Scott did u just spray the face of the wood or did you do the edges as well? Serious drying racks there.

Good question. This is an interior trim package. The batch had been spread once previously, all 4 sides, then toned (3 sides), and in this round it is being sprayed 3 sides prior to installation. After install, nail holes will be filled with color putty and a final brushed field coat applied.

Holy drying racks Paintman!  [big grin]

Thanks! We do a lot of prefinishing, so they are handy to have.

I NEED some of those erecta racks!  Have been wanting some for almost two years now!

Yah, highly recommend those. I believe they are now sold through Sherwin Williams. If you get them, be sure to get the green powder coated bars, they are much easier to keep clean than the original galvies.

Funny you say that, I've been trying to get my store to get them for over a year now, saw them in a probuy and wanted them.  They say they can't get them since it's an outside vendor, I'll just end up ordering from the website.  Also, what do you guys use in the shop for ventilation/ air filtration?

800 cfm hard wired wall fan, which I think you can see exhausting in the video. It is a Dayton that we got through Grainger.

Looks like it works, but I am sure there's tons of dust from air borne finish after all that spraying.
How do you keep that space clean?

Good question, Tim. We vacuum religiously and replace the rosin paper floor covering in the spray section periodically.

The biggest way we have found to keep it clean during spray projects is through our own technique. Myself and Todd have found from having sighted each other down for so many years that the two biggest ways to reduce airborne mist (which is so fine that it can settle as dust) is through our own technique. For instance, in this task, short burst engagements with well timed entry and exit of passes radically reduces what ends up in the air. Just making the most out of the transfer efficiency. It doesn't make sense to have a gun that is rated for 85-90% if the user blows it through bad habits.

It is also worth pointing out that cleanliness of the drying area and flow of air away from it in our case is really important as well. Nothing worse than getting through the spray stage, only to be contaminated on the racks.

The challenge of our set up has always been that we could not go to a standard "booth" format because much of our work historically has been in production finishing of longer stock (16'ers commonly) for exterior trim packages, so the shop was initially set up 12 years ago for that type of work, and repurposed as needed for cabinet finishing and interior trim grade.

We are due for a serious round of spring cleaning and clutter reduction in both of our shops. First step is to get everyone elses (clients) stuff out first...

Yup. Finish Pro II, so the compressor is trigger activated, which is nice in a situation like this.

I believe I told you I got to play both the 595. Very sweet rig.

Yes, the smart comp on this generation is a handy feature...
