Those of us in Florida who shop on Amazon will now be paying sales tax (collected by Amazon) as of the 1st of May. [mad]

Considering that my family purchases between 5K and 10K worth of merchandise there annually, that potentially means up to an increase of $600/yr.  [eek]

Like the title of my topic states... All Good Things Must Come To An End....sigh    [crying]

Thankfully, ToolNut and others aren't "yet" caught up in this mess.

Yeah, and Amazon UK stopped free supersaver shipping to Finland April 1st, grrr!

Florida has a sales tax and a use tax. Sales tax is collected at the time of sale. Use tax is to be paid by the purchaser for on taxable items  on which sales tax has not been paid.

Florida Sales and Use Tax

Sales Tax
Each sale, admission charge, storage, or rental is taxable unless the transaction is exempt. Sales tax is added to the price of the taxable goods or service and collected from the purchaser at the time of sale. Florida's general sales tax rate is 6 percent.

Use Tax
Use tax is due on the use or consumption of taxable goods or services when sales tax was not paid at the time of purchase. For example:

•If you buy a taxable item in Florida and didn't pay sales tax, you owe use tax.
•If you buy an item tax-exempt intending to resell it and then use the item in your business or for personal use, you owe use tax.
•If you buy a taxable item outside Florida and bring or have it delivered into this state and you didn't pay sales tax on the item, you owe use tax.

This is pretty much the standard in all states that have a sales and use tax. Many states are now collecting the Use Tax as part of the state income tax filing and have sent dunning letters for past years. These states also allow a credit for sales or use tax paid to other states at the time of purchase.

George,

That's all well and good, but as I'm sure you are WELL aware, 99% of people do NOT report their online and out of state purchases to their states. That is not to say that it is proper....just normal.  Now Amazon has been forced to charge taxes on behalf of Florida because they are opening a 1.1 million SF distribution facility in Florida with 2500 seasonal and 1100 permanent jobs.

I get it... just not happy to now have 6% increase in my purchases...despite whether I claim them with the state or not.... and virtually nobody does, and the state knows it.

That is true, but Amazon did not have build a warehouse of Florida.

The state of New York has gone after Sales/Use Tax scofflaws and had national or international press about it. The CEO of Tyco International was brought to the wood shed for having any number of expensive pieces of artwork from New York art dealers sent to his Connecticut home ant then driving them back to New York City and place them in his office. The state of New York did collect and the CEO lost his job.

Since cars purchased out of state and brought back to Florida need license plates, the states with Use Tax collect upon registration of the car and I am sure the counties of Florida also collect their pound of flesh.

Same thing happened in California a year or two ago.  So we now have several warehouse in California.  But the cost to all of us buyers is sales tax.  [mad]

Same thing here in Nevada happened earlier this year - and its kind of weird as Amazon has had fulfillment centers in Nevada for years but not collected sales tax for Nevada shipments. Oh well, suddenly my Amazon purchases dried up!!

Tax evasion is as American as baseball and apple pie lol.  Townshend would be pleased to see what we tollerate now, some folks are just a few centuries ahead of the game.

Went through this last year in PA with amazon.  Me, I'm trying to look at what we've gained and not so much in what we lost, additional tax revenue that the state desperately needs.  This money helps to pay for stuff we use like schools and roads....

If they do that here I will just buy from my local brick and motar store.

Amazon is opening tons of distribution centers.  We now have two close to me.  It is not uncommon for them to negotiate deals with states regarding the collection of taxes in exchange for preferential treaty or subsidies.  States will continue to work their way up to collecting all the missed income streams as they can.  I am not being political here.

Peter

That's probably a good thing regardless
I agree but it was nice to save that money especially when you are spending $1000-1500 at a pop.

If you buy from a Amazon reseller & Not from Amazon Direct , you pay no state sales tax
(unless you live in the resellers state of coarse)
Then again Prime is useless on a reseller by Amazon  sale
They get Ya coming & going   [blink]
