Fogtainer Design Opinions Poll for Those Interested in Buying

March 14, 2010 - We have just learned that the storage tops are not available in the blue color.  PM's have been sent to those who have sent PM's expressing interest.  Sorry for the bad news.

Choice, choices, choices.

First, anybody who has followed this project should be shouting the praises of two hardworking members - Wayne, and Johnny.   [thumbs up] Yesterday I gave them what I thought was reasonably possible based on what I have learned.  Both spent hours yesterday and today working independently and together to put together ideas thru renderings that resulted in the images below ultimately rendered by Wayne - a cabinet maker. This render took over 5 hours to produce.

The images below represent the best guess of what we think may be accomplished within our parameters.  Some notes about placements, etc.  The large logo was rendered the way it was on the sys 1 and on the sys 5 in the same place for ultimate cost considerations - setup costs.  The logos on the latches were placed where we felt there would be the least contact with fingers or thumbs.

If you are not interested in buying:  Please do not vote.  Voting will then pollute the integrity of the data.  However feel free to post comments in this thread

The data collected will be used to determine the design submitted for approval.  The majority will rule.

I voted for the large green logo to be printed, no latch logo and of course these will cost more than normal. My think is in keeping the cost down with a large printed logo and no latch logo. Although I'm pretty flexible since the both renderings look good.

A quick question about engraving, will the color of the engraved logos be black? I believe most engraving is. Another thing that should be considered now is an idea of what the costs might be for these options. It doesn't make sense for people to ask/vote for options that might rise the price beyond their limit. We'd only need a ballpark price for each option, like it will add $3 for a printed logo and $8 for engraved and so on. (The prices I used here are only used as examples, I don't know the pricing.)

Wonderful job guys!  [thumbs up] I did vote my preferences as requested, but will almost certainly purchase a couple of fogtainers even if my choices do not win (although I would be really worried about the durability of printed labels).  I would be willing to pay up to $20 more per fogtainer for etched rather than printed labels.

Nice work boys!!!   I like Brice's idea of offering just latches for my existing systainers.  I do like the large FOG rendering on the box, but not with the latches also; a bit too busy for my eye.

I guess Wayne's more original design is no longer an option?  I really liked the smaller logo but would understand that because of its placement would rule out screenprinting or engraving.  

One nice thing about its placement is that it would not interfere with any labelling added to the smaller sys 1 & 2.

The idea of the engraving would be that it is engraved and then printed or painted (in blue) into the recess. The idea is to make the logo here more resilient than a standard print, since it's in an area which would be directly handled in use. The main logo wouldn't be directly handled much, so wouldn't need this.

As things stand at the moment, we're not sure how feasible this is (hence the 'if possible' suffix) but it's being looked into.

Good questions.  I did investigate those possibilities.  Here is why I suggested the renderings be put forth this way:

Tanos systainers already come with raised lettering in that area.  To eliminate that so that we could print there would require separate molds to be made.  Large companies only find it economical to have custom molds made when they expect to produce in excess of 100,000 of a product.  The other issue that was to be considered is that our hope is to be able to offer the storage lids on some choices.  That area couldn't be printed in that area on those models, which would then require special altered considerations.

Likewise it is my understanding that the green handle would have its own separate hurdles.  Additionally, even if we could overcome those hurdles, there would be a lead time that would disappoint many members.

I love the questions.  Ask away, and if I can answer, I will.

The idea about other latches available separately is a good one that could be looked at.

I forgot to add big kudos to you as well!  

Thanks for answering the questions, I'm sure others may have had them as well.  What if the FOG logo was smaller?  That would enable a label and still have the recognition it deserves.  That could also enable printing on the latches as well for those who may want the latches only to complement their existing systainers.

We thought about the size of the large logo as well as the usage of the systainers.  If the large logo was made smaller, it would work well on the sys 1 and maybe the sys 2.  But the fear is that it would look totally out of place and too small on the 3,4,or 5.  Each time we offer a different size of the logo, you add about $75 to $100 for the setup if my memory serves me correctly.  $100 over 150 systainers is better than $300 over 150 systainers.  Larger systainers can hold more stuff, and whereas all these systainers would augment a collection, the larger ones might hold an assortment of items or tools rather than one and labels would become more important than they might be on the smaller sys's. I think that I can speak for the designers that we would have loved to have had the logo even larger on the larger boxes, but compromised in design to make it less costly so that there was a chance to offer more sizes.

Printing on the latches and having extra latches is a possibility TBD based on responses.

Peter, Wayne & Jonny.  Great work so far.  I like the big logo engraved in green.  It would be nice if the handle could be green but not essential.  I did vote for engraved latches but as Brice said, would be a good option to have these available as separate items.  Off course these will be more expensive than standard ones, goes without saying.  Would be nice if we could start talking g some sort of figures though, just in case we are talking silly money.

1 question about the final design above that we are voting on. You had said at one time that the green latches were an exclusive between Tanos and Festool. Has this been resolved?  I really like the design in general. My request count may increase. Thanks Johnny and Wayne for your personal time and effort. They look awesome. TIM

I don't believe that we are talking silly numbers at all.  I'll be working on those next week.  I have a paying gig as a carpenter starting next week for the first time since before Christmas and that will require some of my time.

Regarding the green latches - I have assurances from the highest person we know here  [wink] [wink] that Festool green latches will be available for this project.

Nice looking systainer,

I appreciate all the effort put into this and I have a few suggestions and comments.

For the logo size and placement I really don't care, yet I voted anway

The no-go on the attic lid is not a deal breaker for me.

If is simplifies things and reduces cost why not only offer one size of systainer?

As for the cost I would not expect it to be higher since at the end of the day its just a different colour and the addition of the logo aids in advertising for FOG.  I would assume the profit from the sale of the systainers would also help subsidize the cost of creating the fogtainers.
