What in the H E double toothpicks is this:

[attachimg=#1]

I found it in my recently departed father-in-laws garage.  I thought it was an evil dentists extraction tool or the mafia used it to cut off fingers. I found Cyclops Iron Works from Sheffield England but it appears to be long gone.  Any of you across the ponders have an idea?

Could it been used for changing horse shoes on horses?

That would be my guess.

I believe it is a nail puller. Put the jaws over the head of the nail and slam the slide down to dimple the wood around to get a good grip and pry back against the foot.

I used one something like that to pull hundreds of nails in the floor boards in my attic, it worked quite well!

Bikeboy is right!!

I just did a yahoo image search for antique nail puller and it showed up!

Nice job Bikeboy!

Yep - my dad had a couple of them.  The handle is a sliding unit that lets you drive the jaws down around a nail head and then pull it out.  We used to use it when we were repairing broken bridge boards on the farm.

Worked better than any tool for pulling a nail but not destroying the wood.

The handle actual extents out a bit so that makes sense so you could create more leverage.  He has some other stuff to that looks obscure so take some more pics and lets see what happens.

I hate to even respond to this post. I'd rather not think of myself as an old timer.
Nail puller variation. I have one someone in one of my buckets of old tools. Looks almost if not the same. Used to use it years ago on jobs with my old man.

As an old timer, I have one of those nail pullers. Might have been my grandfathers.

I have one that I bought about 35 years ago.
The extendable handle is also used as a slide hammer to drive the jaws in beside the nail head so you can grip the head.
You can pull some really stubborn nails with it without much damage to the wood.

My Dad gave me one of these nail pullers with a sliding hammer when I remodeled an old farm house.

I found a new one the other day at a local supply store called "Big R."  Pretty good for pulling flooring nails.

I have one of those nail pullers. If you ever have to pull a nail that is set below the surface you will not find a better tool to perform this task.
